(h,k)

Definition: Example: (h, k) is the vertex of the parabola, and x = h is the axis of symmetry. the h represents a horizontal shift (how far left, or right, the graph has shifted from x = 0). the k represents a vertical shift (how far up, or down, the graph has shifted from y = 0).

Definition: Example: -1 < y <= 2 This is an example of a range where a graph has no y value less than or equal to -1 and no y value greater than 2.

Definition: Example: A parameter is any variable that affects the outcome of the graph.

parent graph

Definition: Example: A parent graph is the most simplest form of the graph where there is nothing modified about it. The locator point for a parent graph, 'h' and 'k', is always (0,0) and a=1.

Definition: Example: The locator point represents the point where the (h and k) reside of the graph. While also used to move an equation and make it into a graph.

Definition: Example: The place on a graph where the y component of the equation equals 0. Compare to "x-intercept". A graph may have more than one y-intercept. It can be found by taking a equation, such as y=2x+3, and making y equal 0, like this: 0=2x+3.

stretch factor

Definition: Example: The stretch factor is "a" in a(x-h)^2 +k when a is greater than 1. 2(x-2)^2 -1 in this example 2 is the stretch factor. In this case, the red one is the less vertically stretched one, and the blue one is the more vertically stretched one.

Definition: Example: Vertex form (or graphing form) : y=a(x-h)^2+k shows the locator point location( h,k) as well as tells us if the equation is being expanded/compressed (a), moved to the left/right(h), or up/down(k).
