Saltwater intrusion happens when salt water from the ocean mixes with freshwater and contaminates well water. This happens when too many wells are drilled and the water pressure is lowered, which allows salt water to move into the aquifer. With fewer wells drilled pressure from the freshwater is higher and saltwater can not intrude.
