Develop an argument that explains which of the three models of representative democracy—participatory, pluralist, or elite—best achieves the founders' intent for American democracy in terms of ensuring a stable government run by the people. Use at least one piece of evidence from one of the following foundational documents: o Brutus 1 o Federalist 10 o The United States Constitution

A pluralist government closely achieves the Founding Fathers' intent of ensuring a stable government for the people. The Founding Fathers wanted interest groups to play a part in political decisions. A pluralist government prevents a specific interest group from dominating and creating a bias policy. In Federalist 10, a document written by James Madison, argues that a strong representative government would control the effects of the factions. To explain that a representative government is more effective against factionalism, Madison states, "Under such a regulation, it may well happen that the public voice pronounced by the representatives of the people, will be more consonant to the public good, than if pronounced by the people themselves convened for the purpose." In an elite form of government you are just creating tyranny because the elite would just get richer and the poor would get poorer. In a participatory government every citizen would be contributing to governmental actions, so that would be too many citizens for a participatory government to be practical.

Explain how the facts of McCulloch v. Maryland and the facts of Arizona v. United States led to a similar holding in both cases.

In McCulloch v. Maryland it was decided that states did not have the power to tax the Federal bank. In Arizona v. United States it was decided that the states did not have the power to regulate and enforce immigration law. Both these cases deal with how the states tried to take power given to the federal government constitutionally.

Explain why informal methods are used more often than the formal amendment process.

Informal methods are used more often than formal amendment processes because it is difficult to get 2 ⁄ 3 of the House of Representatives and Senate to agree or get 2 ⁄ 3 of the states to agree on a Constitutional Convention. This is very hard to get and which is why there are only 27 amendments over the past 200 years.

Why is the Connecticut Compromise significant?

It proposed Senate with equal representation, and representation in the House based on population

Purpose of Brutus 1

Identify two formal methods for adding amendments to the Constitution.

Proposal and Ratification are the two steps to add amendments to the Constitution. Two formal methods for adding amendments to the Constitution is one a 2 ⁄ 3 majority vote in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The second method is a Constitutional convention to be called by 2/3 of state legislatures. For the ratification is by 3⁄4 of state legislatures or 38 out of 50 states have to agree.

Explain how public education spending as shown in the map demonstrates the principle of federalism.

Public education funds are funded by taxes. The state and local governments are ones that deal with public education in the United States. If the state governments receive less money from taxes then the local governments are going to receive less money from the states. And as I said before the state governments are the ones that deal with public education, so there will not be enough money for public education.

McCulloch v. Maryland

The issue was if the federal government had the power to set up a federal bank and if the states had the power to tax the Federal government. The ruling was the federal government had the power to set up a federal bank and the states did not have the power to tax the Federal government. Making the bank was an implied power under the elastic clause which granted Congress the authority to "make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution" the work of the Federal Government.

Describe two informal methods that have been used to change the meaning of the Constitution. Provide one specific example for each informal method you described.

Two informal methods that have been used to change the meaning of the Constitution is judicial interpretations. This means another way of saying judicial review is the ability of the court to declare a Legislative or Executive Act in violation of the Constitution. This was used in Marbury vs. Madison because it gave the power of federal courts to declare legislative and executive acts unconstitutional. Another informal method is the use of technology in government related activities. An example of this is when the government send an emergency test alert to all the phones in America.
