ch.1 lesson.1 what is life
Taxonomy
The study off how things are classified The scientific study of how things are classified.
Binomial nomenclature
The system in witch every organism is given a two part name indicating its genus and species. The classification system in witch each organism is given a unique two-part scientific name indicating its genus and species.
Classification
You group things together that are mostly the same. The process of grouping based on there similarities.
Autotroph
an organism that can make its own food An organism that is able to capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and uses it to produce its own food.
Heterotroph
an organism that can not make its own food an orginism that can not make its own food and gets food by other liveing things.
Unicellular
are single celled organisms Made of a single cell
Cell
building blocks of life The basic unit of structure and function in liveing things
Asexual reproduction
there is only one parent and the of spring is just like its parent (kind of like a clone) A reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are genetically identical the parent.
Multi cellular
they have many cells like a dog Consisting of many cells
Development
when an organism grows or changes The process of change that occurs during an organisms life
Organism
something that is alive A living thing
Spontaneous generation
the theory that's material can create liking things this theory is wrong tho the mistaking idea that live things arise out of non living material.
Stimulus
when an organisms surroundings change the organism reacts. Any change or signal in the environment that can make an organism react in some way.
Response
when there is a change in some things behave your. An action or change in behave your that occurs as a result of a stimulus
Metabolism
where an organism builds up or breaks down material The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials
Sexual reproduction
there are to parents and the child is different from both of them. A reproductive process that involves to parents that combine there genetic material to produce a new organism that differs from both parents.
Species
Similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce off springs that can also mate. A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce off springs that can also mate and reproduce.
Genus
A way of grouping that has a number of similar closely related species. A classification grouping that consists of a number of similar closely related species.
Homeostasis
where an organisms inside environment is kept OK even of there out side environment is not. the condition in witch an organisms internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment.
Controlled experiment
where every thing in the experiment is the same except things called manipulated variable. an experiment where only 1 veritable is manipulated.
