Bartolomeu Dias
Bartolomeu Dias, a nobleman from the royal household, was a Portuguese explorer. He explored the south of Africa in 1488 and he was the first one to do so.
Dutch East India Company
Dutch East India Company was founded by the Dutch in 1602 to protect their trade in the Indian Ocean and to assist in their war of independence from Spain.
Prince Henry "The Navigator"
Prince Henry of Portugal was a great supporter of exploration and he sent ship after ship to the west coast of Africa. Because he was a great supporter of exploration, he was called Henry the Navigator. He was also the initiator of the Age of Exploration.
Vasco De Gama
The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama made three sea voyages to India between 1497 and 1524. His voyages opened a sea route from Western Europe to the East and made Portugal a world power.
Treaty of Tordesillas
Treaty of Tordesillas, (June 7, 1494), agreement between Spain and Portugal was aimed at settling conflicts over lands newly discovered or explored by Christopher Columbus and other late 15th-century voyagers.
