Cultural Diversity

It is important for us, as OT practitioners, to understand and be sensitive to beliefs about health, illness and treatment.

Ethnicity

cultural and physical differences; denotes origin

Culture

refers to the set of values, belief, traditions, norms and customs that determine or define the behavior of a group of people from generation to generation

Diverse populations include (but are not limited to) the following:

*African Americans *Asian Americans *Pacific Islanders *Hispanic/Latino Americans *Individuals with disabling conditions *Gays and Lesbians

*As OT practitioners, we must understand our own values, appreciate our own cultural influences and possess self awareness to be culturally sensitive advocates for the patients or clients we treat.

*As healthcare professionals, we must learn how to work successfully with all kinds of people. *Having an appreciation of cultural and diversity allows us to examine the differences and to use this information as strengths or positive aspects of treatment.

*As we deliver quality OT services, we must integrate a respect for the patient's cultural diversity. *If these cultural and diverse differences are not considered, both the patient and the therapist may find treatment less satisfying.

Acculturation

behaviors of a cultural group becoming more like the American norms

Tolerance

a fair and objective attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, races, religion or nationality differ from one's own; an allowable deviation from the norm

Culture

a learned, shared and symbolically transmitted design for living. Culture is often thought of in terms of ethnic origin, sexual preference, place of residence or age.

Bias

a tendency or inclination of outlook; a subjective point of view. To cause prejudice.

Diversity

an appreciation of, sensitivity to and integration of differences into an organization and/or society. Examples of diversity can be gender, race, ethnic background, lifestyle preference, socioeconomic status or physical condition.

Stereotype

an exaggerated belief, concept, idea or image about a person or group that is held by people

Prejudice

an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought or reason; preconceived feeling or notion about a race, religion or national group

Diversity

denotes an appreciation of, sensitivity to and integration of differences into an organization and society.

Assimilation

merging of cultural traits; becoming identical to a dominant culture
