Drivers Education Chapter 3
stopping distance depends on numerous factors, including
1. condition of brakes 2. condition and type of tires 3. speed you are traveling at 4. condition of roadway you are on 5. vehicle weight (heavier the car, more distance is needed to stop; remember to always factor in weight) 6. reaction time 7. weather
Seatbelts prevent the following
1. motorist/passenger from sliding on the seat during stop/turns 2. slow body down with vehicle 3. prevent motorist and passengers from being thrown from vehicle
a turn signal must be used at least
100 feet before turning and you must be in the proper lane; not like the idiot in the picture
when you are traveling at 40 MPH the stopping distance is
167 feet
An infant must be in a reclining, rear-facing infant when
20 pounds and 26 inches or less
when you are traveling at 60 mph the stopping distance is
343 feet
When a toddler can sit up easily without help the seat can face forward and be in the upright position and face forward when they weigh at least
40 pounds
A convertible car seat is used for an infant or a toddler of up to
40 pounds and 40 inches in height
for normal driving, hands should be at
9 and 3
right turn signal
Make a high five signal or make an L (confusing I know)
If found with ice or snow on the car (without dislodging from the car)
The fine may be $25 to $75 dollars just for being on the vehicle
never place a rear facing infant safety seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has
air bags
to drive in reverse straight, a motorist's head and body should be turned
all the way to the right so one can see through back window
A blind spot is
anyplace where the drivers can not see
test anti lock brakes
applying steady pressure to the brake pedal-do not pump and do not hit brakes hard
a car seat should be placed in the
back of the car (obviously the seat is way to big for the baby)
stopping signal
bend arm so fingers point to the road
In the winter, a driver in NJ could receive a violation if they do not
clear ice or snow off the car in the winter
if your horn and/or turn signal is not functioning you need to signal the drivers with
hand signals
left turn signal
hand straight out
weight and stopping
if you double the weight of a car, you double the stopping distance
A child 12 years old or under may not ride
in the front
A booster seat must be used
on a child 8 years old and under who weigh less than 80 pounds
the most common type of parking in city streets
parallel
when parking with a curb
parking downhill, turn the wheels to the curb but parking uphill, turn the wheels away from the curb. UP UP and AWAY.
What if the driver has an infant but NO backseat?
put the car seat in the front (TURN OFF AIRBAGS)
Seatbelts
save lives. I had several patients that looked like this in the intensive care unit. They were the lucky ones since anyone in the car without a seatbelt went downstairs....to the morgue
to drive in reverse, your right hand and arm should be placed over the back of
the front passenger seat (it is hard with bucket seats)
In order to reduce blind spots, adjust the side mirror so you see
the tip of the drivers side front door handle
parking without a curb
turn wheels away
always use the proper signal when
turning, stopping, moving
the lap belt should be worn
under the abdomen and low across hips; follow the bruise under the abdomen which travels across the hips this is the right way to wear a seatbelt
