Pronoun GENDER ISSUES

A student must see their counselor before the end of the semester. This may not sound wrong, but "student" is singular and "their" is plural. To correct this error, you can either make "student" plural or change the pronoun to "his or her," both singular but allowing for each gender to be addressed: Students must see their counselor before the end of the semester. A student must see his or her counselor before the end of the semester.

Wrath

Extreme or violent anger

The speaker does not express their anger to their foe, and because of this, their anger worsens until it eventually grows into a poisonous tree.

How do the speaker's actions in the first stanza provoke action in the poem?

His foe dies from the poison apple grown by the speaker.

How does the conclusion of the poem impact the poem's theme?

telling their friend that they are angry, but not by telling their enemy

How does the speaker deal with anger?

Symbolism is when one thing stands for another. The theme of the poem is that when you hold onto anger, it can build up until it injures your foe (and even yourself).

INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

Indefinite pronouns are those that don't refer to any specific person, such as anyone, anybody, everyone, everybody, someone, somebody, no one, and nobody. The problem is whether these pronouns are singular or plural. "Everyone" sounds like a lot of people, but in the grammar of a sentence, it is actually singular (as are all of the indefinite pronouns listed here). When you say something like, "Everyone in this building is an important donor to our charity," you are saying that each and every person fits this description, making the word singular. If that description didn't apply to every single person in the room, you would have to say, "Most people in this building . . ."

Revenge is a common and recurring theme in literature and film and has been so as long as humans have been in existence. It's a natural feeling that if someone does something to harm you that you would want to do something to harm them in return. There are some who would argue that "an eye for an eye" is the only sort of justice that needs to exist in the world. Others would argue that thoughts of revenge are often consuming and exacting revenge lifts no weight off your own soul.

Is revenge ever justified?

Revenge isn't always something that has to be carried out in order to be poisonous. Sometimes, just harboring resentments and hate towards someone is enough to poison the well in our lives. In "On Revenge," Sir Francis Bacon tells us that we should stay away from thoughts of revenge as they will consume us. With that thought, the essential question gets modified a little too "Is wanting to exact revenge ever justified?" Was Montessor in "The Cask of Amontillado" on the wrong path just by thinking about and planning revenge against Fortunado?

Is revenge ever justified?

Sir Francis Bacon let us know in "On Revenge" that we should look forward in our lives and that revenge is something that causes us to look backwards. However, in "The Cask of Amontillado," Poe gives us a short story about a man who has not only had his mind set on revenge for some time, he seems to take pride in how he goes about exacting revenge on his enemy. Not to give away too much of the plot, but you will reach the end of the story and still never know what this other person did to harm our main character in the first place.

Is revenge ever justified?

"That which is past is gone, and irrevocable; wise men have enough to do with things present and to come: therefore they do but trifle with themselves, that labor in past matters."

PART B: Cite evidence from the text to support the answer to Part A.

Symolism in a poison tree

The Tree The Apple Watering the tree Sunshine for the tree

We should accept both the good and bad in our friends.

The author would most likely agree with which of the following statements?

Falling Action

The falling action is where things begin to wind down because the tension and suspense that led up to the climax are now resolved. Falling action usually shows how characters are doing after the climax and how events have affected the characters.

Here are the important takeaways from this lesson:

The main idea of "On Revenge" is to never take up the idea of revenge, instead choosing to move forward When reading any text that is largely based on opinion, look for ways that the author supports his or her opinion

Resolution

The resolution shows the outcome of the conflict and often helps make the theme clear. In stories that are part of a series, one immediate conflict may have been resolved while other questions and conflicts remain, setting up the next book or movie in the series.

Rising Action

This is the portion of the story where the complications build and the conflict begins to bring the character to a turning point. This is the point where the reader is in suspense and wants to find out how the conflict is resolved.

Climax

This is the turning point in the story where the main character faces the conflict or has to solve the problem.

Exposition

This is where the author introduces the setting and the characters. There's usually an "inciting incident" which establishes the conflict or pushes the character into a struggle.

is either a by-product of selfishness or cannot be resisted.

To do a wrong...

The speaker's enemy eats the poison apple and is found dead under the tree.

What happens to the speaker at the end of the poem?

The speaker tends to their wrath like a plant that later produces a poisoned fruit, implying that anger can feel satisfying but is toxic to let grow.

What impact does the figurative language in lines 5-8 have on the poem's meaning?

To examine the nature and consequences of revenge

What is the author's likely purpose in this passage?

No one will hear or find Fortunato.

What is the most likely reason the narrator chose the catacombs as the setting for his revenge in "The Cask of Amontillado"?

it grows just like a plant does

What symbolically happens to the speaker's anger towards their enemy (or foe)?

"How do you know this is true?" "What evidence or proof do you have to back up your opinion?" "Does your opinion consider both sides or is it only one-sided?"

When reading any type of personal essay, what you are reading is mostly the author's personal opinion. As is the nature of opinions, the author can say whatever he or she likes, but it doesn't necessarily make it true. As a reader, your job is to look at the author's opinion critically. This doesn't mean to criticize as in belittle his opinion, it means to view his opinion carefully and ask questions as you read. For example, here are some good questions to ask:

To dwell on revenge is to dwell in the past, never moving forward, and therefore not worth the effort.

Which of the following best describes a central idea of the text?

Bottling up one's feelings leads to resentment and even violence.

Which of the following best describes a major theme of the poem?

"At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely, settled" (Paragraph 1)

Which of the following quotes best supports the answer to the previous question?

"I was angry with my foe: / I told it not, my wrath did grow." (Lines 3-4)

Which of the following quotes best supports the theme?

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Which of the following sayings best describes a theme of the text?

grim and suspenseful

Which pair of words best describe the mood, or atmosphere, of "The Cask of Amontillado"?

"unpardonable"

Which phrase from paragraph 6 best supports the meaning of "perfidious"?

"For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them."

Which statement from "The Cask of Amontillado" supports a prediction that the narrator's crime will remain undiscovered?

Fortunato

With whom does the narrator have a conflict in "The Cask of Amontillado"?

Pronouns

are words that take the place of a noun (like he, she, it, and they)

comparitive / superlative

comparative means to compare and superlative means that one thing is "super" or better than all the rest.

Some words use completely different words for each form. These you just have to learn because there's no real rule that dictates which words are treated this way. For example, good is the simple adjective, better is the comparative form, and best is the superlative. Likewise, the word bad has the comparative form of worse, and worst is the superlative.

good, better, best; bad, worse, worst; little, less, least; ect.

For words that contain two or more syllables, use the word "more" for the comparative form and "most" for the superlative.

important, more important, most important; expensive, more expensive, most expensive; tilted, more tilted, most tilted; ect.

antecedent

is the word that the pronoun replaces.

base

lowly

green

new or fresh

irrevocable

not possible to revoke or change

disloyal

perfidious
