.exe

"Executable" file. (EXEcutable file) Pronounced "ex-ee file." The name given to a program in machine language that is ready to run in the operating system. The name comes from the .EXE extension at the end of the program name; for example: XYZ.EXE.

File Extensions

A file extension associates a digital file with a program or tells you the type of file it is. It comes after the file name and includes a "dot" and characters.

.html

An HTML file is a Web page that contains code written in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). This code defines the format and content of the Web page and may include references to images and other types of media. When a user visits the Web page, the HTML code is parsed by the user's Web browser and the content of the Web page appears in the browser window. HTML files can be created with a Web development program, such as Adobe Dreamweaver, or with a basic text editor. When an HTML page is loaded by a Web browser, the browser displays the content of page, rather than the HTML itself. To view the HTML source code, you can select "View Source," which is typically located in the Web browser's View menu.

.jpg or .jpeg

The term actually stands for "Joint Photographic Experts Group," because that is the name of the committee that developed the format. But you don't have to remember that because even computer nerds will think you're weird if you mention what JPEG stands for. Instead, remember that a JPEG is a compressed image file format. JPEG images are not limited to a certain amount of color, like GIF images are. Therefore, the JPEG format is best for compressing photographic images. So if you see a large, colorful image on the Web, it is most likely a JPEG file. While JPEG images can contain colorful, high-resolution image data, it is a lossy format, which means some quality is lost when the image is compressed. If the image is compressed too much, the graphics become noticeably "blocky" and some of the detail is lost. Like GIFs, JPEGs are crossplatform, meaning the same file will look the same on both a Mac and PC.

.zip

Zip files are single files, sometimes called "archives", that contain one or more compressed files. Zip files make it easy to keep related files together and make transporting, e-mailing, downloading and storing data and software faster and more efficient. The Zip format is the most popular compression format used in the Windows environment, and WinZip is the most popular compression utility. (compressed format for files)

.pdf

Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format used to present documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics and other information needed to display it.
