(i) Describe how salinization occurs. (ii) Describe one method to prevent or remediate soil salinization.
(i) Salinization can occur when irrigation water is evaporated or is used by plants, leaving the salts behind in the soils. (ii) One method used to prevent or remediate soil salinization is to flush the soil with sufficient water to leach the salts down through the soil or wait for rain to flush the salts out of the soil.
Using the smooth curve that you created above, determine the year in which the human population is likely to run out of arable land for agriculture.
2048
Soil quality is a critical factor in agriculture. Identify TWO physical and/or chemical properties of soils and describe the role of each property in determining soil quality.
One property of soil is the acidity of the soil. The role in determining soil quality is that different plants have different pH tolerances so many plants grow best in neutral soils. Another property of soil is the article size/texture of the soil. The role in determining soil quality is that you can determine the soils ability to hold onto nutrients and its ability to allow water to infiltrate.
Describe TWO viable strategies for reducing the amount of land needed for agriculture.
One viable strategy for reducing the amount of land needed for agriculture is decreasing the demand for agricultural land. This can be done by eating lower on the food chain which would reduce the amount f land needed to raise livestock. Another strategy to reduce the land needed for agriculture is Increasing crop yield. This can be done by instituting crop rotation to improve soil fertility.
