But remember... this question is asking about the pet in the video. So go back and look at the video if you do not remember the picture with President Harrison, his dog, his children... and the pet pulling the cart.

Because Benjamin Harrison believed in protecting American farmers and businesses from having to compete against goods made in other countries, he supported tariffs on anything imported into America. American farmers and business owners liked the tariffs, because it protected them from foreign competition. However, American consumers were not big fans of tariffs, because they wanted to be able to buy the foreign goods without the tax. Without the tax, the foreign goods would cost less _______ , and just like you and me, people in the 1800's wanted to purchase goods at the lowest price possible.

In 1876, 11 years after the Civil War, Bemjamin Harrison ran for governor of Indiana, but he lost. Five years later he ran for the office of Indiana State Senator. (Remember... Indiana has state representatives and senators. They meet in Indianapolis and make laws for the state of Indiana.) Harrison won that election in 1881 and became a State Senator, an office he would hold for six years. While he was a state senator, Harrison worked to pass laws that increased the monthly retirement payments to army veterans and their widows. Retirement payments are also called ________. He also is famous for working to increase educational opportunities for ________ Americans.

Benjamin Harrison was in favor of tariffs on foreign goods. A tariff is a tax placed on something made in another country. A country will put a tariff on things made in another country so that it is more expensive than the items that are made in their own country. This encourages people to buy the product made in their own country. For example, corn is grown both in Canada and in the United States. If American farmers are selling their corn for $10 a bushel, and Canada brings their corn into America and starts selling it for $9 a bushel, Americans would start to buy Canadian corn. To stop that from happening, the government would put a tax on Canadian corn. If that tax is $2 a bushel, Canadian corn would now cost $11 a bushel. ($9 plus $2 tax = $11 for a bushel of Canadian corn) Now that Canadian corn is more expensive than corn grown in the United States, Americans will go back to buying corn grown in America. This tax on Canadian corn protected the American farmers. It made it so they could continue growing corn and making a profit. This tax on a foreign good is called a ________.
tariff
Because tariffs were so high, the American government started to have extra money building up in banks. All of this extra money was called a tariff surplus, because all of that extra money was coming from the tariffs on foreign goods. (You and I cannot even imagine a time where America was not in debt... but while Harrison was president, the United States actually had a surplus of cash.) The tariff levels became the most talked about issue when Benjamin Harrison ran for re-election in 1892. The high tariff rates had created a surplus of money in the Treasury, which led many Democrats to call for lowering them, so that Americans could buy foreign made products for less money. Most Republicans preferred to keep the high tariff rates, because they wanted to spend that money on internal improvements to the country, like building better roads, bridges, and railroads and eliminate other taxes that Americans were paying. Because so many Americans did not agree with how President Harrison was handling the ______ , he _______the election of 1892. Note: Blank 1 is a two word answer.

This video does not mention it... but when President Harrison was running for re-election in 1892, he was VERY familiar with his opponent. He was running against Grover Cleveland, the very man that he had defeated four years earlier. As you saw earlier in the video, Grover Cleveland was president from 1885 - 1889, because when he ran for re-election in 1888, Benjamin Harrison defeated him. Four years later, when Benjamin Harrison ran for re-election in 1892, Grover Cleveland decided to try to get the presidency back, and he succeeded! Grover Cleveland is the only President of the United States to serve four years as President, run for re-election and lose, and then, after four years, run again _______ and then the presidential election a second time. Grover Cleveland was president from 1885 - 1889 and then again from 1893 - 1897. He was our 22nd and 24th president. I wonder if Donald Trump is planning on seeing if he can be the second man to pull that off? Benjamin Harrison is the only president to have the same man in office before him and _______ him. He was our 23rd president. I am sure that Joe Biden is hoping that Donald Trump cannot pull off such a unique victory in 2024.
