Guidance vs. Punishment
The Guidance Triangle
Adults need to take three important elements into consideration: Child: development, temperament. "whole child" Adult: Their role in child's life, own values and biases Situation: physical environment- time of day, what else is going on, what is unique about the situation
Guidance
An ongoing system of strategies to help children learn to manage impulses, express feelings, channel frustration, solve problems, and learn the difference between inappropriate and appropriate behavior.
Punishment
A consequence for inappropriate behavior
Difference between Guidance and Punishment
Guidance/Discipline & Punishment 1) Emphasizes what child should do/Emphasizes what child should not do 2) Sets an example to follow /Expects obedience 3) Is positive/ Is negative 4) Accepts child's need to assert self/Makes child behave 5) Fosters child's ability to think/ Thinks for the child
