The Guidance Triangle

Adults need to take three important elements into consideration: Child: development, temperament. "whole child" Adult: Their role in child's life, own values and biases Situation: physical environment- time of day, what else is going on, what is unique about the situation

Guidance

An ongoing system of strategies to help children learn to manage impulses, express feelings, channel frustration, solve problems, and learn the difference between inappropriate and appropriate behavior.

A consequence for inappropriate behavior

Guidance/Discipline & Punishment 1) Emphasizes what child should do/Emphasizes what child should not do 2) Sets an example to follow /Expects obedience 3) Is positive/ Is negative 4) Accepts child's need to assert self/Makes child behave 5) Fosters child's ability to think/ Thinks for the child

Guidance Techniques

If: Whining: Ignore Restless, inattentive: change activity Playing cooperatively: positive reinforcement Won't cooperate: provide a choice of 2 diff. activities Arguing over a toy: active listening- recognize child's wants
