the first test of a truly great man is his humility." He continued: "I do not mean, by humility, doubt of his own power. ... [But really] great men ... have a curious ... feeling that ... greatness is not in them, but through them. ... And they see something Divine ... in every other man ..., and are endlessly, foolishly, incredibly merciful."

John Ruskin (quoted in "to walk humbly with thy God")

To me, failure is only when you quit trying, if you keep working at a task and try to do what's right and honest, ultimately it works out"

Russell M. Ballard (LDS information page)

I still write books about management stuff and career planning and it's all baloney. If you are a member of the church and you are trying to honor your covenants and be good and do good, God will help you be where you are supposed to be.

Elder Bednar from "Living in Revelation" an ensign college devotional

Doubt, unless changed into inquiry from reliable, trustworthy sources, has no value or worth. The stagnant doubter, one content with himself, unwilling to make the appropriate effort, to pay the price of divine discovery, inevitably reaches unbelief and darkness. His doubts grow like poisonous mushrooms in the dim shadows of his mental and spiritual chambers. At last, blind like the mole in his burrow, he usually substitutes ridicule for reason, indolence for labor, and becomes a lazy scholar. Doubt is not wrong unless it becomes an end in and of itself. That doubt which feeds and grows upon itself, and breeds more doubt, is evil."

Elder John A. Widstoe

Sometimes we are tempted to let our lives be governed more by convenience than by covenant. It is not always convenient to live gospel standards and stand up for truth and testify of the Restoration. ... But there is no spiritual power in living by convenience. The power comes as we keep our covenants

M. Russell Ballard

Courage isn't having the strength to go on - it is going on when you don't have strength."

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE

The work of devils and of darkness is never more certain to be defeated than when men and women, not finding it easy or pleasant but still determined to do the Father's will, look out upon their lives from which it may seem every trace of God has vanished, and asking why they have been so forsaken, still bow their heads and obey. [Paraphrased from C. S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters (New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., 1961), p. 39]

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate"

Psychologist Carl Jung

That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing itself is changed, but that our power to do is increased.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Take your questions directly to your Heavenly Father in prayer. Ask Him, in the name of Jesus Christ, to guide you. You can learn for yourself—right now—how to receive personal revelation. And nothing will make a bigger difference to your life than that! "I promise you—not the person sitting next to you—but you, that, wherever you are in the world, wherever you are on the covenant path—even if, at this moment, you are not centered on the path—I promise you that if you will sincerely and persistently do the spiritual work needed to develop the crucial, spiritual skill of learning how to hear the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, that you will have all the direction you will ever need in your life. You will be given the answers to the questions of your heart, in the Lord's own way and time. "When you know your life is being directed by God, regardless of the challenges and disappointments that may come, you will feel jo

"The difference between successful people and really successful people, is that really successful people say no to almost everything."

Warren Buffet

if I want to recognize the Spirit, I can't let myself be led into useless thoughts or the everyday concerns of life... In the same way a ship cannot easily travel through a storm, we cannot hear the Spirit if we are carried away by the cares of life that are outside of our control.

"The light is always green, unless it's yellow or red."

3/7/21 English area devotional with elder Ballard. Sister Eubank said a piece of advice she always relies on is something Elder Boyd K. Packer said to a new bishop. The bishop said he had been called for 5 months and had issued a bunch of calls and was not sure if he was doing it right. He said it seemed logical, and made sense but didn't feel anything super crashes in response, president packer said the above.

1. Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side; With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In ev'ry change he faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: Thy best, thy heav'nly Friend Thru thorny ways leads to a joyful end. 2. Be still, my soul: Thy God doth undertake To guide the future as he has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: The waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below. 3. Be still, my soul: The hour is hast'ning on When we shall be forever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: When change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Benjamin Mee: You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.

All I have to do is ... keep my spirit, feelings and conscience like a sheet of blank paper, and let the spirit and power of God write upon it what he pleases. When he writes, I will read; but if I read before he writes, I am very likely to be wrong."

Brigham Young

The more perplexed you are the holier you need to be.

If today you are a little bit better than you were yesterday, then that's enough. And, if tomorrow you are a little bit better than you were today, then that's enough.

David A. Bednar

"Spirituality is the consciousness of victory over self, and of communion with the Infinite. Spirituality impels one to conquer difficulties and acquire more and more strength. To feel one's faculties unfolding and truth expanding the soul is one of life's sublimest experiences."

David O. McKay

We are not saved "because" of all that we can do. Have any of us done all that we can do? Does God wait until we've expended every effort before He will intervene in our lives with His saving grace? Many people feel discouraged because they constantly fall short. They know firsthand that "the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." They raise their voices with Nephi in proclaiming, "My soul grieveth because of mine iniquities." I am certain Nephi knew that the Savior's grace allows and enables us to overcome sin. This is why Nephi labored so diligently to persuade his children and brethren "to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God." After all, that is what we can do! And that is our task in mortality!

Dieter F. Uctdorf

If you cross to the devil's side of the line one inch, you are in the tempter's power, and if he is successful, you will not be able to think or even reason properly, because you will have lost the spirit of the Lord."

George Albert Smith

Give me a mediocre idea that is flawlessly executed and I will win every time over a genius idea that is never implemented.

Avoid decision avoidance, solve the problem, embrace the challenge, and be fast-acting!

Guardsight: incident response

Every great opportunity has many reasons why it could fail. You have to trust your ability to solve problems along the way. People who look for reasons why things won't work, struggle to take action. People who look for reasons why things will work—and solve problems as they arise—make things happen

Walk peacefully. Walk confidently. Walk without fear and without envy. Be reassured of Heavenly Father's abundance to you always.

Jeffrey R. Holland "the other prodigal"

Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud: Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. ... It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

pay your tithing as a declaration that possession of material goods and the accumulation of worldly wealth are not the uppermost goals of your existence

Jeffry R. Holland "like a watered garden" oct 2001

Fathers, if you wish your children to be taught in the principles of the gospel, if you wish them to love the truth and understand it, if you wish them to be obedient to and united with you, love them! and prove to them that you do love them by your every word or act to them. For your own sake, for the love that should exist between you and your boys—however wayward they might be ... when you speak or talk to them, do it not in anger, do it not harshly, in a condemning spirit. Speak to them kindly; get them down and weep with them if necessary and get them to shed tears with you if possible. Soften their hearts; get them to feel tenderly toward you. Use no lash and no violence, but ... approach them with reason, with persuasion and love unfeigned. ... Get them to feel as you feel, have interest in the things in which you take interest, to love the gospel as you love it, to love one another as you love them; to love t

Show me Latter-day Saints who have to feed upon miracles, signs and visions in order to keep them steadfast in the Church, and I will show you members of the Church who are not in good standing before God, and who are walking in slippery paths. It is not by marvelous manifestations unto us that we shall be established in the truth, but it is by humility and faithful obedience to the commandments and laws of God. When I as a boy first started out in the ministry, I would frequently go out and ask the Lord to show me some marvelous thing, in order that I might receive a testimony. But the Lord withheld marvels from me, and showed me the truth, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little, until he made me to know the truth from the crown of my head to the soles of my feet, and until doubt and fear had been absolutely purged from me.

Joseph F. Smith

Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.
