Net accounts receivable do not change, and there is no charge to bad debt expense when specific accounts are identified as uncollectible and written off using the allowance method. (b) The allowance method is preferable because it matches the cost of making a credit sale with the revenues generated by the sale in the same period and achieves a proper carrying value for accounts receivable at the end of a period. Since the direct write-off method does not recognize the bad debt expense until a specific amount is deemed uncollectible, which may be in a subsequent period, it does not comply with the expense recognition principle and does not achieve a proper carrying value for accounts receivable at the end of a period.
