Antibiotics may still be effective, though more serious infections are becoming more difficult to treat.
Treatment of VRE
Antibiotics, though VRE can be very resistant to them.
What is MRSA?
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Bacterial infection.
What are enterococci and why is VRE serious?
Normal bacteria that typically live in intestines and on skin, usually w/o issue. However, if VRE infection occurs, it can cause serious, life-threatening illness to those with compromised immune systems (young, old, very ill, etc)
How is VRE most typically caused?
Often spread via a health professional to a pt in a hospital or other healthcare setting.
What is VRE?
Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus. A type of enterococci bacteria.
Sx of MRSA:
chest pain fatigue fever HA rash SoB
How can MRSA be caused?
entering the body via cut, sore, catheter or breathing tube.
Sx of VRE
wound infection : red/tender skin. urinary: back pain, burning urination, increased urination. Could also present with diarrhea, weakness, fever, or chills.
