Do you think extracurricular eligibility should be dependent on academic performance? Should it be the same for academic clubs and sports?

I think how you perform in school is more important than how you do in sports. Academics is a much higher priority as it focuses on the growth of your learning. This rule should be the same for any club or activity you would like to participate in. Academics should always come before sports.

How did Allison Doresett react to Philip's phone call? What is your prediction of their relationship?

I think she was surprised to get a call from him. She thinks he is making excuses and not being mature about the school work. I think Phillip will end up liking her since she already went to her for advice on the assignment.

What do you think of Philip's answer to the exam question? What do you think of Miss Narwin's comments? Is the grade she gave him fair?

I think that his answer is bad and that his response is not reasonable. I think that Miss Narwin's comments are good, I agree that his answer needs work and that he did not put his full effort into answering it. I think the grade that she gave him is fair and if he complains about it then he'll have to bring it up and next time maybe he will put more effort into answering his exams questions.

Can you make a prediction of what effect the D in English will have on Philip's life?

I think the effect of the D will have a good effect on him for the future. Hopefully this will show him that he needs to work harder to get a better grade. But if it doesn't, then in the future he will have to stick with bad grades which don't look good for him.

How does Miss Narwin feel about her teaching career? How can you tell?

It is very important to her, I think, even through ups and downs that she really enjoys her job. As she says "I will complain from time to time, but it is my life. The truth is, I like it."

What do you think of Philip's response to Miss Narwin's question to him on page 25? Was there a better way to handle it? Do you understand why he reacted this way?

It was very obvious that he wasn't paying attention at all. He was probably daydreaming about something. If I was him I would've just been truthful about it and apologized for not listening. He reacted this way because he's still annoyed about his grade in her class.

What does another student, Ken Barchet, think of Miss Narwin? Chap 10, p. 31. How does Philip feel about being transferred to her homeroom?

Ken Barchet thinks that Miss Narwin is "Okay". By this I think that he does not have an opinion on her and does not care which homeroom he is in. Philip on the other hand is very mad about being in her homeroom and ELA class. As he says "Can't stand even looking at her" as soon as he finds out. Furthermore, he made it very clear to the readers that he is going to try desperately to transfer out of her class.

What novel is Philip reading that was given to him by another student? ☺ Why do you think the author inserts this novel into his book? What point is Avi trying to make?

On page 18 philip mentones that Sarah Gloss is reading The Outsiders and says she'll loan it to him when she is done. I think Avi is subtly showing that everyone wants him to get better at LA, Sarah, his coach, his parents, and more people.

What do you think of Philip's parents' attitude toward his poor grade in English? What is the solution here?

Phillip's parents need to have more discipline on how he does in school. His mom brought up that he could fail the class, but his dad completely overlooked it. They didn't care too much about how he was doing in school right now. They just focused on how he could fix it in the future, like summer school. They think that would teach him a good lesson. They just need to be more strict about his grades. They should also try to understand why he is actually doing bad. They need to ask him how he's actually feeling.

What is Miss Narwin's impression of Philip Malloy? What information from the book leads to your conclusion?

She knows that he doesn't want to learn at all. But she believes he has the potential to be a good student. That is why she is so strict about literature, it's important.

What is Miss Narwin trying to accomplish in her memo to Mrs. Doane on page 14? What is Miss Narwin saying about herself?

She wants Dr. Gertrude Doane wrote her a thorough request for the State University. She is saying that she is a very good teacher and she wants him to write a good request for her considering all she has done for the school.

What does Philip do on his first morning in Miss Narwin's homeroom that she objects to? What does he say to justify what he is doing? Is this the whole truth?

On his first day when Dr. Doane asked for silence during the national anthem Philip was humming even though he was asked to stop multiple times. He attempted to justify what he was doing by saying that Mr. Lunser doesn't mind when he hums, but in reality he was just trying to annoy Miss Narwin.

How does Philip Malloy feel about his English teacher, Miss Narwin? What is your evidence?

He doesn't like her very much. He thinks that she is "so uptight." She seems very strict.

What does it tell you about Philip that he thinks he can tell what people think of him? List 3 character traits you can attribute to him from the information we have read so far.

He is trying to impress Allison and he thinks that she is starting to like him back. The fact that he thinks it's actually working shows he is that charismatic, witty, and smart.

What solutions did the track coach offer Philip to his predicament about his grade preventing him from trying out for the track team? What was his response?

He suggested that he put in all the work and work hard in order to get his grade up in his classes. He could even ask for extra credit opportunities. Phillip reacted by making more excuses of how he didn 't know there was even a rule.

Why wasn't Philip honest with his father about why he isn't trying out for the track team, especially after all of his training? Do you think it would have been better if Philip was honest with his dad from the beginning? Is he telling his dad the truth?

He wasn't being honest because if he told his dad the real reason he didn't want to try out, he knew they would be a lot more strict on his grades. I think it would've been better to tell the truth from the start. His dad already knew the passion he has for track. He would've pushed him to work harder in school so he could be on the team. The truth is he has to have a passing grade in every class. He has a D in English so he cannot be on the team. He didn't tell his dad about any of that.

We learn that Philip's father was also a great runner in college. Why did he have to quit? How do you think this affects Philip's desire to run track? How does it affect his relationship with his father?

His father had to quit because his dad got sick and he couldn't afford to stay in college. I think that Phillip would have a great desire to do track because he wants to accomplish something that his dad couldn't. The relationship he has with his father will probably change because his dad will be really proud of him for "following" him in his footsteps.

Why is Philip's father angry at him when they went out to dinner? Why is Philip a little angry right back? Do you understand what happened between them?

I think Philip's father is mad at Philip for two main reasons, first he does not want to try out for the track team. Secondly, his grades were bad. I think that Philip is a little angry due to the fact that his father does not understand that just because he did that sport does not mean his son needs to. I understand both sides of the argument. I think that the father just thinks that this is what is best for Philip. On the other hand I understand why Philip would be frustrated that his father wants him to do a sport that he does not want to participate in.

How does Miss Narwin feel about not receiving the money to attend the academic workshop? How can you tell?

Miss Narwin feels hurt, angered, and annoyed that the money she feels should go to the academic workshop. Miss Narwin is annoyed that the money went to "bread and circuses" instead of something she qualifies as important. She is hurt that the money went to Kimberly Howard, someone whose husband works for a big company and has the funds for it. Miss Narwin claims that the only reason Kimberly even got the money is because the superintendent did not want to lose his job.

Do you think Miss Narwin really has it out for Philip? What could both of them do to resolve this situation before it gets worse? Whose responsibility is it to rectify this conflict?

Miss Narwin in my opinion is a very good teacher. She's strict about the subject she teaches because she wants her students to learn and grow their ability to read and write literature. Phillip just thinks her class is boring. He doesn't actually try to understand what he is teaching. If he actually did, he could actually like it. I think he should ask Miss Narwin for help in her class. If he doesn't understand something, he just has to ask her and she will help because she is his teacher. This conflict is all on Phillip. If he wants to do track, he really has to work hard in her class to get a passing grade. If he wants to get a passing grade, that's when he should seek advice from her.

A foil is a character in literature or other media that has characteristics in contrast to another character. How is Mr. Lunser a foil for Miss Narwin?

Mr.Lunser is harsher with his students, he treats them almost as if they were friends. Miss Narwin cares about her students, she is patient and kind to them.

Chap 8 What happened to the request Miss Narwin made for funds to attend a workshop on more modern approaches to teaching literature?

The principal loved her genuine approach to the situation. But due to the limit of money the school had, he could not approve it.

What is the point of the Memo by Dr. Seymour on pages 16-17?

To make people aware of the budget and how important it is.

How does student Todd Becker feel about Miss Narwin? Chap 10, p. 38. What does Philip tell Todd that he was doing in Miss Narwin's homeroom? Was Philip telling the truth?

Todd Becker likes Miss. Narwin. Philip told Todd that Miss Narwin made him stop singing or humming the Star Spangled banner for no reason and that Miss Narwin has something against him. I believe that Philip was lying. I think this because when he first began to tell the story he changed it. He started by saying he was singing but then changed it and said he was humming.
