17

*Anyone can register or apply to become a donor.* 1) When registering, you will either need to provide a valid driver's license or state ID card number. 2) Then if you are 18 or older, you may simply request to have the "DONOR" designation appear on your license in the bottom right corner; doing this identifies your wish to donate organs/tissues upon your death.

20 [Effectiveness of the solution]

*By implementing this solution, many benefits will follow:*

23

*Finally, your family can cope with the loss of a loved one.* 1) The donation offers comfort to your grieving family; they can take comfort in the fact that their loss will help to save or better other people's lives. 2) Donation also offers your family that last bit of closure because they will know and recognize that a piece of you is nearby and always with them.

21

*First and foremost, men, women, and children will be saved by your choice.* 1)Your large/vital organs can save 8 lives. 2)Your smaller donations can immensely impact up to 52 other people.

11

*Four years later, September 2016, Sarah passed away -leaving behind her family; however, Sarah was a registered organ donor.* 1) Her kidneys went to two young women who'd spent several years on dialysis; her liver was given to a 50-year-old man with chronic liver disease. 2) Out of her death came something extraordinarily beautiful and because of her, three people were able to live.

32 [Action Step]

*I want you, each and every single one of you, to choose life.* Register to become a donor. 1) Go online. 2) Print and mail. 3) Go to the DMV. The choice is yours, 1) Register today. 2) Register now. Without you, we are nothing, but with you, we are everything.

13

*In other words, organ donation is a gift.* 1) If it was you, wouldn't you want the gift of life to be passed on to you or your loved ones? 2) To be given a chance at life again?

12 [Audience involvement]

*Just like Sarah, it could be you or your family members who have become ill and very much in need of help.* 1)As we all know, life is extremely unpredictable. 2)In one single second, everything about you or your family members can change drastically. *You never know when an emergency or health condition will arise and what things, such as organs, will be necessary to sustain life.

29 [Negative visualization]

*Now, if you choose to not register, there is no way to know the immense impact you could make.* 1) Your right to save lives after your death is swept out from under your feet. 2) Meaning that men, women, and children of all ages will simply continue to die while they wait patiently for the organ they need to live.

8

*Regardless of the need, there is a very small amount of people who are registered to donate.* 1) According to_________________________ , 95% of U.S. adults support organ donation but only 48% are actually signed up as donors. 2) Similarly, 96.6% of this class voted on my survey saying that they supported organ donation, however, nearly half of the people in this room are not registered to become donors.

22

*Second the recipient of the organ is given all that they were hoping for.* 1) The beneficiary receives a second chance to live their life. 2) They also receive an improved quality of life; meaning they no longer have to be dependent on costly routine treatments to survive and can instead return to a normal lifestyle.

18

*Several easy forms of registration are available and can be used when convenient for you.* 1) One option available is to register online. 2) Another option to register is by mail or fax. 3) Finally, you can register in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles nearest you.

28 [Positive visualization]

*The lack of organs does not have to have a damaging toll on our society* Imagine a world where men, woman, and children can be scheduled for a lifesaving transplant at time they are diagnosed as needing the transplant. 1) A world where someone you love or you, yourself receive a needed transplants at an optimal time. 2) Meaning that you, or your loved one can quickly return to normal life with little to no suffering. With this world, we would finally have the upper hand on the "uncontrollable" pieces of life. 1) We can prevent a horde of unnecessary deaths. 2) While also having the ability to keep families whole.

7 [Extent and seriousness problem]

*The need for lifesaving organs is endless.* 1) Every 10 min. another person is added to the waiting list, revealing that 9 people will be added to the transplant list today while we are sitting in this class. a) On this list, 2 out of every 3 people are over the age of 50, while almost 2,000 are children. 2)However, only 3 in 1,000 people die in a way that allows for organ donation. 3) Meaning, each year, the number of people on the list continues to rapidly grow, while the number of donors and transplants grows very, very slowly.

25 [Turn the Tables]

*These common concepts that prevent a person from registering, however, are false and can be labeled as myths.* 1) Myth 1: If I register, the staff at the hospital will not work to save my life. 2) Myth 2: I am too young to be an organ donor. 3) Myth 3: Donating takes away my option of an open-casket funeral 4) Myth 4: People who are rich and famous become first on the list when they need an organ.

9 [Illustration of the problem]

*To illustrate this problem, Sarah Wright is the wife of Richie Wright and the loving mother of three children: Harry, Marnie and Billy.*

31 [Summary]

*Today I tried to persuade you to become an organ donor.* 1) First, I discussed the severe need for organs. 2) Second, I described the easy and free 3)Finally, you should feel confident in the choice of becoming an organ donor, as it allows for immense benefits for you, the recipient, and your family.

10

1) Sarah was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, where abnormal amounts of collagen — a dense firm tissue— was present along the lining of her lungs, thus affecting the ability of her lungs contract/expand. 2) While medications can slow the deterioration of her lungs, the only cure to this condition is a double lung transplant. Without this, the disorder is fatal and leaves most sufferers with two-five years left to live. 3) Sarah was put on the waiting list in November 2011

26 [Reduce to Absurdity]

1) When you are in the hospital, a doctors only focus is to save your life — not the person across the hall. 2) There is legal age requirements, however all ages are encouraged to donate! If you are underage, you can express your wish to donate to your family to get their consent; children and teens are also in need of organ transplants, and they typically need smaller organs than those an adult can bring forth. 3) Donating organs does not hinder a person's ability to have an open-casket funeral. The donor's body is fully clothed for this even so there are no visible signs or characteristics of the donation. For things such as bone donation, a rod is inserted where bone once remained. With the donation of skin, a meniscal layer of skin is taken from the back of the donor, the donors positioning -on back- prevents people from seeing any portion of the donation. 4) Those who are rich/famous are not given special treatment when it comes to allotting organs; it may seem that way because of the amount of publicity and paparazzi, but these people are treated no differently than those who are also on the list

3 [Credibility Statement]

As most of you know, my name is Morgan Bosen and I registered to become an organ donor at the age of 16.

6 [Statement of the Problem]

Now that you know the extent of the problem as well as the need for organs, I will discuss a solution that satisfies every aspect of the problem.

30 [Transition]

Over all, a world with more organ donors is much more beneficial to our society; this leads me to my conclusion.

15 [Evaluation of proposed alternative]

Registering to become an organ donor is like breathing: easy, painless, and free.

16 [Statement of my solution]

To increase the number of organs available, we must all register to become a donor.

5 [transition]

Transition: I will begin by depicting the vast problem at hand.

1 [Attention Getter]

You may not know this but, by this exact time tomorrow, 21 American people who are living right now will be dead. 1) These people did not die because of they got into a car accident, they didn't die because a random event like a shooting, they didn't die because it "was their time". 2) These people died simply because they couldn't be given the life-saving organ transplant they desperately needed.
