In our day there is a lot of discussion about whether the Bible's account of creation can be believed as true. How would you answer this?
It is the role of science to tell us about the "what" or "how" of God's creation. Scientists can tell us how old things are and what they are made of. The Bible tells us about the "why" of God's creation. Using various literary forms, the biblical writers give us religious truth and history about creation. Put another way, we do not consult our biology book to tell us about God's love, mercy, and justice, and we do not fault biology for not giving us answers to these questions. Similarly, we should not consult the Bible when seeking scientific truth, and we should not fault the Bible, or worse, force scientific truth to fit the Bible, when we do not find it there.
