Definition

A strategy of exposition that gives the essential meaning of something.

Classification

A strategy of exposition that puts people or things into categories based on their distinguishing characteristics.

Process Analysis

A form of expository writing that breaks something down into its component operations or that gives directions on how to do something.

Conclusion

A restatement or summary of the author's main idea (thesis). A conclusion may also offer something that builds on the author's main idea (a prediction, etc.).

Example

A specific instance of a general group or idea.

Cause and Effect

A strategy of exposition in which the writer analyzes why an event occurred and/or traces its consequences.

Comparison and Contrast

A strategy of exposition that explores the similarities and differences between two persons, places, things, or ideas.

Supporting Evidence

What specific information does the author provide to support their thesis? May be connected to the common exposition strategies (example, comparison/contrast, etc.)
