Imagines what the world with tech-advanced senses would look like. Evidence used to support main points 13. Ex. scenario-if we had x. We would see y. A quick comparison to the primitive humans Universe is expanding. Galaxies reading 14. Ex. scenario- if x. Than y. Understand, medicine/disease without belief in god's wrath. We could see viruses/bacteria, solve infection problems much sooner. 15. Ex. scenario. If x then y. No need for geiger counters- radon gas detection. Yay science saves lives. Discussion: What commonly held belief is he trying to counter (argue against)? How well do you think he makes his case?
Challenge: Summarize Paragraphs 11-15 Main Points:
Continued discoveries are not based on our senses, but on the tech, we are using FUTURE discoveries that can b Evidence used to support main points: String theory, particle physics, made Discussion: What commonly held belief is he trying to counter (argue against)? How well do you think he makes his case? Some may argue that science has already progressed enough how well do you think he makes his case?
Challenge: Summarize Paragraphs 16-17 Main Points:
The first quotation States the same point as the second, but the second quotation talks about the different scientific instruments and lists them. The purpose behind this was so emphasize or needed science is there is emphasis needed to put on the scientific instruments to show the growth of our society. The quotation quotations are alike because they are from the same quote, but the second one is extended and include more information the author's purpose is adding to the quote here is to emphasize the importance of using technology to enhance our senses.
Compare the quote in this paragraph with the quote in the first paragraph. Note the two things the two versions of the quotation have in common. Note the key differences you see in the second quotation. He adds in more scientific jargon it emphasizes the author of the quates mor eindept details How are the quotations alike? How are quotations different? What is the author's purpose in adding to the quote here?
This essay challenged my belief that we had already innovated enough in science and that we were approaching the point of diminishing returns in that tools already developed were effective and served every purposes that they were needed to and any more tools created or innovation in them would not be the exponential leap that tools that they were in the past. Tyson challenged this idea in this essay by saying, "Discovering new ways of knowing has always heralded new windows on the universe that tap into our growing list of non biological senses. Whenever this happens, a new level of majesty and complexity in the universe reveals itself to us." We would need to develop new tools to discover these windows which would require the continuing support of the scientific community and Tyson's work so we can continue to understand the universe. It challenged how much we believe I know about the world and what we use to understand it. Everyone learns about the five senses in first grade, but never explores their possibilities and how they could be improved. Neil deGrasse Tyson widens our perception of what we can achieve by looking towards technological advances of the science. He explains how scientific tools can be useful in expanding our senses. Tyson tells us, "In modern times, if the sole measure of what's out there flows from your five senses then a precarious life awaits you". We can not be dependent on our five senses to explain the universe. We must utilize the ever-developing technology in order to achieve a higher level of understanding.
Give one example of how this essay challenged your understanding of science and of your five senses. Support your ideas with textual evidence.
Parallel Structure
Language Conventions:____________________ Parallel structure, the repetition of a pattern of words or phrases in a text. This technique helps writers organize and emphasize ideas. Parallel structure can make writing more interesting, lyrical, and rhythmic. Example: Our ears can register the thunderous launch of the space shuttle....And our eyes can register the bright sandy terrain on a sunny beach. Uses Parallel Structure to: make a clear connection between the abilities of two different senses. Example: Our eyes allow us to register information not only from across the room but also from across the universe. Uses Parallel Structure to: Example: If we were born with magnetic detectors... Example 2: And if we were born with big eyes and built-in Doppler motion detectors,... Uses Parallel Structure to:
WHatever bet secret gets passed from our generation to the next, you can bet that none of them were based on the appearance of the night sky. To lighten the mood and emphasize the importance of sight (EXAGGERATION)
Look for the humorous image the author presents. Why might the author begin a serious scientific essay with a humorous image?
improvements such as high resolution I say it would benefit Humanity the most because it would allow us to recognize certain Health dangers such as a virus and bacteria and resolve them with little difficulty. Additionally the ability to detect high-energy particles would also be beneficial because it's blood allow us a spot radioactive substances or dangerous gases before they can cause harm.
Mark ideas in paragraphs 14-15 that challenge what you know about the dangers around us. Bacteria and viruses, postoperative infectious shins, radioactive substances radon gas. Which improvements to our senses would benefit humanity the most? Why?
The obvious conclusion is that well we may know the big sick knowledge of many things around our world and we may not need to know more things about science for the basic need of survival we still want to be able to find out these things since knowing new things including for instance knowing how to make a gas that would produce less carbon dioxide would actually be much more beneficial to our ecosystem from stopping the melting of icebergs so it is important to find me science projects including NASA since being able to find life on another planet may be helpful when we are not able to stay at this planet anymore.
Mark the words, phrases and sentences that help you understand the author's conclusion. Paraphrase: What is the author's conclusion? Explain it in your own words.
Shows extremes that human senses can register
Note the measurements that appear in the paragraph. Feet, parts per million-milligram bug hundreds of feet. How do these measurements help the author illustrate the sensitivity of the human senses?
Turn into. How does repeating this structure help clarify Tyson's point? The repeating structure indicates that the author is presenting his example in a list. List helps to present the evidence in a clear flowing Easy-to-Read way
Note the repeated phrase you see at the start of sentences in paragraph 11.
Parapsychology consists of theories not based on valid scientific evidence, such as the mandela effect or claims of psychic predictions. On the other hand, science is based on valid evidence and observations collected from experiments and Tyson explains that we can use technology to expand our knowledge of science and apply it to solve real world problems Tyson compares parapsychology and science because he wants to show there is a difference between the two methods of learning. Some differences he finds is parapsychology is based on phenomena and other paranormal claims. However, science is knowledge and understanding of things based on evidence which people can apply to their life. Tyson says people need science and other technological advances in life to understand the world around them.
The author compares parapsychology and science. Why does Tyson compare these two methods of learning about the world? What differences does he find?
informative yet humorous
The author shares ideas in a tone that is — serious and dry informative yet humorous lighthearted and imprecise enthusiastic yet ill-informed
Yes, using an ironic, sarcastic tone throughout the essay helps Tyson to make his point. Using this tone helps to lighten the mood and hook the reader in. Not everybody who is reading the story is knowledgeable in the subject he is talking about, which is a very scientific and hard to understand topic. Using an ironic and sarcastic tone helps to make it easier for the reader to understand and relate to. The author's sarcastic tone was effective in helping him make his point, as the material that he was basing his essay on was heavily science based, and could be difficult for the average reader to understand. His casual, sarcastic tone lightened the material, making it easier to understand, and his use of puns helped the reader connect better with the passage and the point that the author was attempting to make. The author's tone was effective in helping him make his point because of his use of parallel structure, such as "Tune into" being used consecutively at the beginning of sentences in paragraph 11, and his sarcastic comparison of human senses and technological ones. When Tyson attempts to state a valid point, he is showing that by using our senses we would not be able to analyze any elements of our world. In the text, he uses humorous phrases as in, "Lick the stuff" or "Captain, it's a blob", which is supposed to be a Star Trek reference. Based on this, he proves that we need to identify and understand our universe, when using scientific tools. Tyson's use of sarcasm throughout the essay helped make a complex topic more accessible to the average reader. He connects our senses and the more scientific parts of the essay to everyday life in a blend of comparisons, references, and sarcastic imagery. This sarcastic tone helps make his point by making the topic easier to understand. After all, a reader cannot agree with a point they do not comprehend.
The author uses an ironic, sarcastic tone throughout the essay. Was his tone effective in helping him make his point? Why or why not?
We as humans have many limitations, including the many of our five senses. First, we do not have eyes with the resolution of "high performance microscopes" so we are not able to see diseases and viruses floating in the air. We cannot detect high energy particles so we cannot see radioactive substances from a far distance. Another example would be our lack of magnetic detectors, eyes that are the resolution of high-performance microscopes, built-in Doppler motion detectors, spectrum analyzers, high-energy particles detectors, the ability to see radio waves, and our lack of high-precision, tunable eyeballs. The final example may be our brains inability to register the world's stimuli in logarithmic rather than linear increments. For example, if you increase the energy of a sound's volume by a factor of 10, your ears will judge this change to be rather small. Increase it by a factor of 2 and you will barely notice. The same goes for our ability to measure light. These are only some of the many examples of the limitations of our five senses.
What are some of the limitations of our five senses? Give a few examples from the text.
Although the author does not present a clear thesis statement in the introduction of his essay, he does mention his thoughts and opinions through his argument. Throughout the essay, the author develops the thesis that science is crucial in order to expand our "non-biological" senses. When looking at the conclusion, a reader will see how the author wraps his argument by stating his final thoughts, which end up to be his thesis. In his thesis, the author gives his opinion that he finds our human senses to lack precision when it comes to discovering; however, with technology evolving, our senses of adventure and discovery can open to a new level of complexity in the world and its natural aspects. The thesis of the story focuses on expanding our non biological senses. The author says, "If we want to know what's out there then we require detectors other than the ones we are born with." Some examples that supports this are telescopes microscopes and mass spectrometers and seismographs and magnetometers and particle accelerators and detectors across the electromagnetic spectrum
What is the thesis that the author develops throughout this essay? What evidence and examples support that thesis?
The question of if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound to the question of how smell carbon monoxide if it is odorless, in which case you dropped at a tree is not relevant to us, but the carbon dioxide poisoning is relevant to our health. How are the questions similar? (hint: carbon dioxide is an odorless gas that is deadly) Both questions are hypocritical What is the point of this analogy? The point of these and Knology it's a show that we must understand that world is much more complex than what our five senses can perceive
When writers make an analogy (para. 17) they are explaining one thing by comparing it to another. Identify what Tyson is comparing:
