Scout says that "Dill Harris could tell the biggest" lies she ever heard. Why might Dill have told such lies?

Dill might have told lies because he wanted to impress Scout and Jem. He also has a great imagination.

Jem wants to return to the Radley yard and fetch his pants so he can stay out of trouble with Atticus. Scout wants Jem to leave the pants where they are and face the consequences with Atticus. With which child do you agree? Why?

I agree with Scout because it would be better to get yelled at than possibly getting shot.

Paraphrase Atticus' speech about the Radleys' right to privacy. Do you agree with his point of view? Why or why not?

Atticus is telling the children to respect a person's privacy because they would want the same treatment. Arthur has the right to stay in or out of his house. I agree with his point of view because I don't want people to bother me.

Describe Miss Maudie Atkinson. How typical is she of Maycomb women? What do the children think of her?

Miss Maudie lives near the Finch's house. Also, she is almost the same age as Jack. She is a widow. She is not so typical because she doesn't like to gossip. The children think of her as a friendly woman.

Miss Maudie says, "...sometimes the Bible in the hands of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of-oh, of your father." Explain what she means.

Miss Maudie means that some people use the bible for their own purposes. They only see things one way which can make them mean and narrow-minded.

What does Miss Maudie tell Scout about Boo? How does this compare with what Scout already believes?

Miss Maudie tells Scout that Arthur was a nice boy. Scout believes that Arthur might be crazy.

List the four reasons Jem and Dill give for deciding to peek into the Radley window on this particular night.

The four reasons are 1. No one can see them 2. Atticus wouldn't notice 3. If they get shot by Boo, they will miss school 4. Easier to see in the dark house.

Find and write down the line from early in the chapter that foreshadows the trouble Jem will have when he tries to flee the Radley's backyard.

We thought it was better to go under the high wire fence at the rear of the Radley lot, we stood less chance of being seen. The fence enclosed a large garden and a narrow wooden outhouse. (Ch. 6)
