being a triptych is interesting considering how late it was made, altar piece with wings opening and closing and also on wood instead of canvas - normally depictions of cruxifixction are either the cross already standing or laying on the ground, but rare to show the effort in the lifting - one of the two thieves killed with him in right panel background, also roman soldiers on horse - left shows John the Evangelist and Mary, woman nursing and random viewers probably followers - central panel has clear diagonal lifting cross cutting panel pretty evenly, makes them half naked to show musculature and action of strain - making terrain not as described in bible to give figure a place to stand and still maintain general diagonal.

Rubens, Henry IV Receiving the Portrait of Marie de' Medici, c. 1625

being presented with many Classical references, like Juno and Jupiter above, - Minerva beside the king (wisdom saying he should marry Marie). •Marie de'Medici also commissioned Rubens to basically fill a room in her palace of Luxembourg, like 15 paintings about her life (roughly).

soldiers standing waiting at a door, unconscious man laying on woman and man and old woman hovers over him with candle and scissors - Samson's hair being cut against his will, presented super athletic - Venus and cupid statue in the background of the room - woman sacrificing her personal feelings to protect people from Samson's power - light and paleness of the woman very emphasized -Old Testament story but not religious apparently, so made to show power of evil temptress women - originally placed in house of Burgomaster Rockox.

Peter Paul Rubens and Frans Snyders, Prometheus, 1610-11 - based on Titian's

- Prometheus being chained to a rock and an eagle sent from Vulcan eating his liver because Prometheus gave the danger of fire to humans - diagonal of man on ground paralleled by eagle's wings

Jacob Jordaens, Satyr with Peasants, after 1620 (there are 2)

- fascinated with country life and wilderness because in the city you don't see that, similar to painting of forest clearing and hermit - based on the fable by Aesop about the Satyr and the Peasant, - showing of moment the man blows on his hot spoon and the satyr jumps up in disgust saying he can't have anything to do with someone who blows hot and cold in the same breath, moral being humans are hypocrites.

Rubens, Death of Henry IV and Proclamation of Marie de' Medici as Regent, c. 1625

- figures of Jupiter and another figure carrying scythe, so Chronos, taking Henry IV to heaven - apotheosis - whole painting means the king is dead - people kneeling in front of her, aristocrats and court members gesturing like please take it we need you, we'll make an acceptation - Minerva and allegory of fortune advising Marie to accept it - figure most highlighted and one next to it both have wings, one has a palm branch and the other armor so peace and war allegories, - horrified and confused by Henry's death, showing the confusion and war that would befall France if another ruler doesn't take the throne

Rubens, Hunting Scene with Hippo and Crocodile, 1614-18 - based on composition of one of Leonardo da Vinci's fresco

- hippo in center with other figures and animals surrounding it - exact moment of top hunters trying to prevent bottom figures' deaths - exoticism of maybe Arab figures, jaguar skin, hippo and crocodile, palm trees in the back.

Jacob Jordaens, Susanna and Elders, 1630-40

- lighter colors, golden items, animals and peacock takes up huge space, dog for loyalty - all this makes it less dramatic than the brooding other painting with darker colors all around - inspired possibly by a print of same subject by Annibale Carracci

Pieter Lastman, Susanna and the Elders, 1614 - Rembrandt's master

- she's not as covered, they don't seem nearly as aggressive - full landscape in the back, and a Roman style villa or temple or something with Italian flora and fauna even though it's a Dutch painting - uses light but not artificial light, but still a contrast with very bright nude of Susanna and landscape much darker in background

Pieter Lastman, Sacrifice of Isaac, 1616

- very yellow and artificial lighting, influenced by Caravaggio - Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac and stopped by the angel - all three figures touching by arm and connected, adding to the drama

Rubens, Minerva Defending Peace from Mars, 1629

- war being pushed away by Minerva - putto at top with Mercury's staff means trade and abundance - adding abundance and partying a wealth aspect with figures to the left having tambourine and a bowl full of gold items - center is a representation of peace, about to breastfeed a child representation probably of earth - contemporary kids guided through ideal world, this is the world our children should live in, no war abundance and joy

-being carried in the opposite direction -same topic and similar to rest

Jesus sitting surrounded by soldiers and peasants and a dog - dirty feet of peasant in bottom right corner is a copy and paste from Caravaggio

Painting of woman bathing with two older men behind her - they are in dark colors and fully clothed, colors indicate evil and clothed while she is bright and naked, also contrast old and young

Rubens did all the figures and Brueghel did the still life aspects and probably the landscape as well.

figure is female on chariot being crowned with crown of pope and carrying vessel for Eucharist, - container ornate because it is actually Christ, cause of conflict between C and P - Catholic Church the allegory in chariot lead by an angel holding coat of arms of the Pope, keys to heaven, - with people on side representing ignorance with donkey ears and blindness supposed to mean the Protestants, who are also being trampled down by the chariot - whole painting mimics tapestry and isn't as defined, because it is a study for a tapestry

Rubens, Deposition, 1611-14 - the closed triptych also contain two paintings of St. Christopher (left is strong carrying baby Jesus and the right is hermit)

left side shows the pregnant Mary meeting her cousin, first from outside to recognize the Messiah is coming soon - right side shows priest with child and parents, presentation of baby Jesus to temple, Jewish tradition offering firstborn son to temple with ceremony, priest is blind but knows immediately it is the future Messiah - mixture of contemporary dressing and then modern dressing - Jesus taken off the cross, deposition, similar diagonal of figures as Raising of the Cross

Rubens, Drunken Silenus, 1615

mentor of Bacchus, looking drunk staggering - female satyr at the bottom feeding children, looks drunk - more animals and animal qualities like man laughing beside Silenus with goat horns and ears - shows through small glimpse that we are out in the countryside somewhere where peasants live similar to animal-like beings - repoussoir figure highlighted next to Silenus making eye contact with us as if saying join us in the joke

Aegidius Sadeler after Spranger, Triumph of Minerva/Wisdom over Ignorance, c. 1600

not this one but can't find the correct image - one we viewed in the Ackland similar but close up front view

Rubens, Marie de'Medici Landing in Marseilles, c. 1625

nymphs at bottom with Poseidon - Marie coming off ship, nymphs nudes highlighted more than Marie. - figure that looks like Minerva but evidently isn't, she has fleur de lis on her cape, personification of France receiving the new queen - allegory of fame or victory blowing trumpets announcing arrival.

Frans Snyders, Fish Market - figures by Anthony van Dyck, 1618-20

predominately still-life, with figures in the right and back - woman to the right is rich looking with servant behind, handing money so probably buying very expensive produce such as the still-life in the front - still-life very polished and crisp details and the figures are much softer and fuzzier, clearly two distinct parts and artists •Still-life- pictorial representation of inanimate objects, term from the Dutch still-leven meaning motionless natural object(s)
