began when the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown, Virginia in 1619 to aid with the farming of tobacco.
What efforts do you think the author means when she says " Without the idealistic, strenuous and patriotic efforts of black Americans, our democracy today would most likely look very different"
Without the economy of slavery between the 1600s and late 1700s, the United States would be completely different. "Profits from black people's stolen labor helped the young nation pay off its war debts." This means that because the labor was unpaid, the country was steered into a different direction to where it is now. Slavery had paved the way to where the country is now, in both good and bad ways. Black Americans are the backbone of the nation and they drove the country through the path it is on. I think that the author means all of the efforts she's previously listed, like surviving slavery, building the houses and buildings that our democracy was shaped in, and paving the way for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, immigration rights, and disibilitiy rights. Without the work of Black Americans, our legal systems and government would be very different from where they are now. The author may be stating this because African American involvement in both the nations' founding and its reform was and still is much bigger a role than many comprehend. Slavery and its eventual decline brought an era's worth of civil rights movements on an international scale, which opened up more movements in its wake. Diversity campaigns are everywhere now, and America was exposed to unique and world-altering culture changes across the 1900s and even today that never would have happened if the tragedies of 1619 hadn't occurred.
