AP Geography: Where is Industry Distributed?
How were textiles impacted by the I.R.?
Thread was usually spun at home, but an invention known as mill allowed it to be done mechanically.
Define cottage industry:
A home-based manufacturing system
Define the Industrial Revolution:
A series of improvements in the industrial technology that transformed the process of manufacturing goods.
Inputs of steel:
Alloy of iron, manufactured by removing impurities such as silicon, sulfur
Fabricated metals--What are they and why are they located near their market?
Brings metal together such as steel and transforms them into a more complex object. Have a heavier volume than their inputs.
Define labor intensive industry:
Wages needed to pay employed are a high percentage of expense. .
Process of spinning and where and why:
Fibers can be spun from natural or synthetic elements. Done on low wage countries bc it is a labor intensive job.
How was the iron industry impacted by the I.R.?
It expanded a lot because the steam engine was able to provide enough energy to keep the ovens (which were needed to make iron products) hot enough.
How was the coal industry impacted by the I.R.?
It replaced wood (wood was becoming scarce in England) and it became the source of energy to operate the ovens and heat the steam engines.
How were chemicals impacted by the I.R.?
It was an industry created to bleach and dye cloth.
Define textile:
Woven fabrics
Weaving ""
Woven together by a loom. Low wage countries bc of high labor costs.
Give an example or a perishable product:
Milk, bread, produce
Why is labor the most important of the site factors?
Minimizing labor costs is important for some companies
What are some of the largest manufacturing regions?
North America, Europe, and Asia.
Factors taken into consideration for placing a new factory:
Proximity to market
Single-market manufactures--examples and a few exceptions
Specialize market manufactures with only 1 or 2 customers example--a producer for motor vehicles
What invention was more important to factories and why?
The steam engine, because it could supply powers far more efficiently than water mills, allowing factories to have all of the steps for a good in one place.
List two bulk-reducing industries:
-Mining -Smelting
What are site factors:
Result form the unique characteristics of location
Textile ""
Sewing--in mdcs because most of the consumers are in mcds
Beverage production--Why is it located close to the market?
The bottle the beverage is put in is heavier than the beverage itself.
