-Attractiveness influences first impressions for both sexes -Physical attractiveness predicts how often people date & how popular people feel
How can equity have a positive impact on a relationship?
-In equity, people recieve from a relationship in proportion to what they give to it -Both partners freely give & receive, which leads them to being happier
How does the "Rickety bridge" study relate to passionate love?
Those who just crossed the bridge had their hearts pounding & later called the woman. To be reved up & to associate some of that arousal w/a desirable person is to feel the pull of passion. Adrenaline makes the heart grow fonder & when sexual desire is supplemented by a growing attachment, the result is the passion of romantic love
How have various cultures defined attractiveness? How do norms & culture influence what we tend to find attractive in others?
-People pierce their noses, dye their hair, get breast implants, laser hair removal, botox etc -Men in many cultures judge women as attractive if they have a youthful, fertile appearance, & w/a low waist-to-hip ratio -Men feel attracted to healthy-looking men & those who seem mature, dominant, masculine, & affluent
How does proximity influence how much we like something or someone? Give an example of how this might work in your high school
-Proximity provides opportunity for liking someone by providing a greater availability to those we often see & repeated exposure to something that increases the liking of it -Ex:You are inclined to like someone you sit by in class
What role does similarity play in attraction?
-The more alike people are, the more the liking endures -We are easily relatable to people who share common attitudes, beliefs & interest & tend to dislike similar people
How might advertisers use this knowledge to persuade you to buy certain products?
Advertisers may advertise products that you use everyday such as shampoo, perfume, & convince you that you need them

An aroused state of intense positive absorption in another, present at the beginning of a love relationship

Online relationships are more likely to last longer & are more satisifying
How does the Mere Exposure Effect increase odds that we will like someone or something?
Repeated exposure to novel stimuli increases our liking of them, so the more time exposed, the greater odds of liking
How does self-disclosure lead to a successful relationship?
Revealing intimate aspects of oneself to others(likes, dislikes, dreams, worries) leads to liking, which leads to deeper intimacy
Companionate love
Deep affectionate attachment we feel for those w/whom our lives are intertwined
How does the expectation of passionate love in a marriage sometimes lead to frustration?
Failure to appreciate passionate loves half life can doom a relationship
