Benjamin Franklin's Role in the Paris Negotiations

Ben was 1 of 3 peace negotiators. Had direct instructions from Congress to make no separate peace and to consult with their French allies at all stages of the negotiations. Was annoyed by this directive. Knew it was written by less important Congress with French indirectly guiding the pen. His clothing and demeanor affected a persona that deliberately violated every norm of diplomatic behavior. Toted old white walking stick instead of a sword, wore homespun garments and a simple fur cap.

Discuss Revolution in Deplomacy

France was in need of revenge against Britain. Because Britain was stripped of colonies, it ceased to be front-ranked power so France might regain former position and prestige. Saw that Americans were in dire need of help to defeat British. After being humiliated in the Battle of Saratoga, British offered colonists home rule within empire, which was everything they wanted except independence. France offered a treaty of alliance to the colonies, but it did not conform exactly to the needs of Franklin's Model Treaty. Even so, it marked an official reconciliation of American independence. With this alliance, the Revolution became a world war.

Model Treaty

Summer of 1776 Continental Congress accordingly drafted model treaty to guide Americans that it was about to send to French court. John Adams described basic principles: 1. No political connection, 2. No military connection, 3. Only a commercial connection. Basically reflected America's desire to foster commercial partnerships rather than political or military entanglements.
