What happens if the water temperature and volume remain constant?

The water will move toward the region of lower pressure

Why will the germinating peas be dropped into a graduated cylinder?

To determine the amount of water that is displaced or the volume of peas.

Relationship between amount of oxygen consumed and the time

There was a constant, graduate incline in the amount of oxygen consumed

Three ways of measuring Cell respiration

Consumption of oxygen (how many moles of oxygen consumed), production of carbon dioxide, and the release of energy during cellular respiration

The effects of Germination on pea seed respiration

Germinating seeds have a higher metabolic rate and needed more oxygen for growth and survival, non-germinating peas needed to consume less oxygen for continued subsistence.

What is the use of potassium hydroxide?

In this experiment, the CO2 produced during cellular respiration is removed by KOH (potassium hydroxide) and therefore will form solid potasssium carbonate (K2CO3)

What is the purpose of the glass bead vial?

It alone will permit detection of any changes in volume due to atmospheric pressure changes or temperature changes

What does the respirometer read?

Once the CO2 is removed the change in the volume of gas in the respirometer will be directly reading how much oxygen is consumed

When the temperature reaches a certain point what happens?

Once the temperature reached a certain point, the enzyme necessary for cellular respiration denatured and germination was inhibited

Conclusion of Lab

Rate of cellular repsiration is greater in germinating peas than in non-germinating peas. Temperature=Respiration rates.

Controls of the expirament

Temperature, time intervals, and unvarying amount of KOH

Cellular Respiration

The release of energy from organic compounds by metabolic chemical oxidation in the mitochondria within the cell. It involves a series of enzyme mediated reactions

What is the Hypothesis in this experiment?

The respirometer with only germinating peas will consume the largest amount of oxygen and will convert the largest amount of carbon dioxide and potassium carbonate.

Why did the vial have to be completely sealed?

The stopper had to be sealed so that no gas could leak out, also it prevents water from entering

During this experiment what happens when oxygen is consumed?

The volume is reduced due to carbon dioxide being converted to a solid, the net result is a decrease in gas volume within the tube and a decrease inn pressure in the tube.

Why has water moved into the respirometer pipettes?

While the peas underwent cellular respiration they consumed oxygen and released CO2 which reacted with KOH producing K2CO3. the water moved into the pipette because the vial and pipette were completely submerged into the bath.
