How many MDFs and IDF per campus?

1 MDF, many IDFs

When terminating twisted-pair cabling, dont leave more than ___ of exposed (stripped) cable before terminating. This increases the possibility of ___.

1 inch, crosstalk

The maximum allowable distance for horizontal cabling is...

100m 90m to connect the network device in the data room to a data jack on the wall in the work area, plus a max of 10m to connect the wall jack to a work station.

Patch

A correction, improvement, or enhancement to part of a software application, often distributed at no charge by software vendors to fix a bug in their code or to add slightly more functionality.

VoIP PBX (private branch exchange)

A dedicated telephone switch or a virtual switching device that connects and manages calls within a private organization, and manages call connections that exit the network through a VoIP gateway.

Wiring Schematic

A graphical representation of a network's wired infrastructure.

Upgrade

A major change to a software package that enhances functionality and features of the software while also correcting bugs and vulnerabilities.

Patch Cable

A relatively short section (usually between 3 and 25 feet) of cabling with connectors on both ends.

Wiki

A website that can be edited by users.

VoIP endpoints

An end user device or application that gives the user access to VoIP services on a network.

TIA/EIA standard specifies at least how many IDF/s per floor?

At least one IDF per floor.

Vertical Cross Connect

Component of the backbone, which runs between a building's floors. May connect an MDF and IDF or 2 IDFs in a building.

Backbone Cabling

Consists of the cables or wireless links that provide interconnection between the entrance facility and MDF, and between the MDF and IDFs.

Licensing Restrictions

Defines who is allowed to use and application and for how long, how many users are allowed to install or access it, whether the application can be made available over a company's network or the Internet, and how many backup copies of the application may be stored.

Demarc

Demarcation Point: The device that marks where a telecommunications service provider's network ends and the organization's network begins. ex. An ISP is responsible for fiber-optic cabling to your building to connect to your LAN. The device where the WAN ends and the LAN begins is the demarc. The service provider is responsible for its network beyond the demarc, the organization is responsible for everything on the campus side of the demarc.

Structured cabling

Describes uniform, enterprise-wide cabling systems, regardless of who manufactures or sells the various parts used in the system.

EIA

Electronic Industries Alliance

Work Area

Encompasses workstations, printers, and other network devices, and all the patch cables, wall jacks, and horizontal cabling necessary to connect these devices to a data room.

Connections fro the IDF branch out to workstations in an ___ topology.

Extended-star

Fiber-Optic Cable

Form of cable that contains one or several glass or plastic fivers in its core and comes in 2 types: SMF or MMF. Transmits data via pulsing light sent from a laser or LED.

Network Diagrams

Graphical representations of a network's devices and connections.

IDF

IDF(Intermediate Distribution Frame): Provides an intermediate connection between t he MDF and end-user equipment in each building. Can refer to either the racks holding the network equipment or the room that houses the racks and equipment.

KVM switches

KVM (Keyboard, video, mouse) switches: Connect to a single console to provide a central control portal for all devices on the rack.

MLA

MLA (Master License Agreement): Grants license from a creator, developer, or producer, such as a software producer, to a third party for the purposes of marketing, sublicensing, or distributing the product to consumers as a stand-alone product or as part of another product.

MOU

MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding): Documents the intentions of 2 or more parties to enter into a binding agreement, or contract, and is sometimes used between an informal handshake and the legally binding signatures on contracts.

MSA

MSA (Master Service Agreement): Contract that defines the terms of future contracts between parties, such as payment terms or arbitration arrangements.

MDF

Main Distribution Frame: AKA the MC (main cross-connect), it is the centralized point of interconnection for an organization's LAN or WAN. MDF can refer either to the holding racks holding the network equipment or the room that houses both the racks and the equipment. MDF and the entrance facility can be in the same data room or in separate rooms.

RFP

RFP (Request For Proposal): A request to vendors to submit a proposal for a product or service your company wants to purchase.

Rack height is measured in ___ with the industry standard being ___ tall.

Rack Units (RU or U), 42U (~6ft)

VoIP telephone equipment

VoIP (Voice over IP): AKA IP telephony, the use of any network to carry voice signals using TCP/IP protocols.

SLA

SLA (Service Level Agreement): Legally binding contract or part of a contract that defines, in plain language and in measurable terms, the aspects of a service provided to a customer, such as the service provided by an ISP.

SOW

SOW (Statement Of Work): Documents in detail the work that must be completed for a particular project, and includes specifics such as tasks, deliverables, standards, payment schedule, and work timeline. Legally binding.

STP

STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) Type of copper-based cable containing twisted-pair wires that are not only individually insulated, but also surrounded by a shielding made of a metallic substance such as foil.

Rack Diagram

Show the devices stacked in a rack system, typically drawn to scale.

TIA/EIA wiring standard is also known as ___.

Structured Cabling

Single cabling standard followed by organizations

TIA/EIA-568 Commercial Building Wiring Standard

TIA

Telecommunications Industry Association

Cable Management tips to prevent Physical Layer failures:

Termination Bend Radius Verify Continuity Cinch Cables Loosely Protect Cables Avoid EMI Plenum Cabling Grounding Slack in Cable Runs Use Cable Trays Patch Panels Company Standards and Stock Documentation

Plenum

The area above the ceiling tile or below the subfloor in a building.

Horizontal Cabling

The cabling that connects workstations to the closest data room and to switches housed in the room.

VoIP gateway

The device that converts an analog telephone call (voice and signals) into data packets (and vice versa) for traversal over an IP-based network.

Entrance Facility

The location where an incoming network service, such as the internet, connects with the school or corporate networks.

Patch Panel

Panel of data receptors which can be mounted to a wall or rack and which provides a central termination point when many patch cables converge in a single location.

Types of Cables

Patch cable, horizontal cabling, Backbone cabling, UTP, STP, Fiber Optic.

When running cable in the plenum, make sure the cabling is ___.

Plenum-rated

Nmap

Program to assist in detecting, identifying, and monitoring the devices on a network.

Rack Systems

Provide bracketing for attaching devices such as routers, servers, switches, patch panels, audiovisual equipment, or telephony equipment. Comes with attached or attachable brackets called rack ears.

Inventory Management

The monitoring and maintaining of all assets that make up a network.

System Life Cycle

The process of designing, implementing, and maintaining an entire network.

Rollback

The process of reverting to a previous version of software after attempting to patch or upgrade it.

Bend radius

The radius of the maximum arc into which you can loop a cable without impairing data transmission. Generally equal to or greater than 4x the diameter of the cable.

Crosstalk

Transmission interference between wires.
