continuous value

Data that can take any value (within a range).

where is the z score

around 1.31

A/An measures the number of standard deviations that a particular value is away from the mean.

z score

Consider a set of data in which the sample mean is 27 and the sample standard deviation is 6.2. Calculate the z-score given that x=28.5. Round your answer to two decimal places.

28.5−27/6.2 = 0.24

statistic

A single measure of some attribute of a sample.

z-score

A value that measures the number of standard deviations that a particular value is away from the mean.

percentile

A value, X, such that approximately P percent of the data are less than or equal to X.

A high school has 40 players on the football team. The summary of the players' weights is given in the box plot. What is the median weight of the players?

In order to determine the median weight of players on the football team, we need to look at the box plot. The middle value from the box plot is the middle value from the five number summary, which is the median data value. Therefore the median weight of players on the football team is 211.

Three potential employees took an aptitude test. Each person took a different version of the test. The scores are reported below. Justin got a score of 84.8; this version has a mean of 72.2 and a standard deviation of 14. Kerri got a score of 271; this version has a mean of 246 and a standard deviation of 25. Norma got a score of 7.9; this version has a mean of 6.8 and a standard deviation of 0.5 If the company has only one position to fill and prefers to fill it with the applicant who performed best on the aptitude test, which of the applicants should be offered the job?

Justin: 84.8-72.2/14= 0.9 Kerri: 271-246/25= 1 Norma: 7.9-6.8/0.5= 2.2 Answer: Norma

A manufacturer makes bags of popcorn and bags of potato chips. The average weight of a bag of popcorn is supposed to be 3.06 ounces with an allowable deviation of 0.04 ounces. The average weight of a bag of potato chips is supposed to be 5.04 ounces with an allowable deviation of 0.02ounces. A factory worker randomly selects a bag of popcorn from the assembly line and it has a weight of 3.05 ounces. Then the worker randomly selects a bag of potato chips from the assembly line and it has a weight of 5.02 ounces. Which description closely matches the findings on the assembly line?

Popcorn: 3.05−3.06/0.04= 0.25 Chips: 5.02−5.04/0.02= -1 The popcorn bag assembly line is closer to the specifications given because its z-score is closer to the standard than the potato chip bag assembly line.
