Explain the GAS (General Adaptation Syndrome) Process:
Stress effects people in 3 steps Alarm phase - outsider stresses individual Resistance phase - body draws reserves from fats Exhaustion phase - depleted it's stores of sugars and fats, leading to disease or death
Define Stress
Stress is defined as the body's reaction to a change to environmental demands
Ways to reduce stress in the workplace?
Give employees autonomy Create fair work environments Telecommuting Employee Sabbaticals
How is stress beneficial?
Helps job performance Complete absence of it = death Need to manage it, find right medium = great
4 Components (building blocks) of Emotional Intelligence (or developing high level of EI)
1) self-awareness - able to perceive emotionss 2) self-management - able to direct emotions 3) social awareness - understand others emotions 4) relationship management - able to help others manage their emotions
Define Emotional Intelligence
Ability to recognize and control your emotions. It's an ability

Cognitive ability (IQ) may be a better predictor than EI (emotional intelligence).
3 Levels of Emotional Labor
Emotional labor refers to the regulation of feelings and expressions for organizational purposes. 1) Surface Acting - showing physical signs of emotion like smiling (in customer service) 2) Deep Acting - showing empathy, feeling bad for someone 3) Genuine Acting - asked to show feelings that are aligned with their own.
What are the 3 components of stress/ the Stress Process?
Physiological -"breakdown" tension, headaches, heart attacks Psychological - anxiety, depression Behavioral - Withdraw (turnover from work)
Explain the role demands
Role Ambiguity - not sure what you're supposed to be doing - vagueness in job responsibilities (STRONGEST PREDICTOR OF POOR PERFORMANCE) Role Conflict - contradicting demands at work. Increase customer service and cut costs, but you think it costs more to have better customer service Role Overload - Not having the time to complete the job

Define Emotional Contagion
Someone else's thought and emotions are effecting yours.
Describe the Type A/ Type B personalities:
Type A:People who display high levels of speed/impatience, job involvement, and hard-driving competitiveness. Type B: Very calm, think through situations
Why don't positive emotional contagions happen all the time?
We need more positive things than negative to keep us in a positive mood (3-5 positives for every 1 negative)
