The Coach's Responsibility:

*It is imperative that the coach maintain a clear head and remain objective in the initial assessment of any injury. *By law, the coach is the person most often held accountable for proper injury management when no athletic trainer or physician is present.

The written plans must include:

*locations of telephones, emergency phone numbers, directions to the contest site, access points to the facility, and other critical information.

There are two good reasons for developing a formal emergency plan for sports injuries:

1. Anything that can be done ahead of time to improve that health care of injured athlete should be a priority. 2. From a legal standpoint, failure to have an emergency plan in place has been found to constitute negligence in litigation resulting from sports injury.

The emergency plan should be a written document that accounts for the following components:

1. Emergency plan for athletics identifies the personnel involved to carry out plans. The plan would start with the staff being trained for Automatic External Defibrillation, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, first aid, and prevention of disease transmission. 2. Emergency plan should specify the equipment needed to carry out the tasks required in the event of an emergency. The plan should include location of equipment. The equipment available should be appropriate to the level of training of the personnel involved. 3. Establishment of a clear mechanism for communication to appropriate emergency care service providers and identification of the mode of transportation for the injured participant are critical elements of an emergency plan. 4. Plan needs to be specific to the activity venue. Each activity and sport should have a defined emergency plan.

Four functions with respect to the emergency plan:

1. Immediate care of the athlete 2. Equipment retrieval (Emergency Equipment) 3. Activation of EMS 4. Directing EMS to the scene of the injury.

The emergency plan should be a written document that accounts for the following components (CONTINUED)

5. Emergency plans should incorporate the emergency care facilities to which the injured individual will be taken. 6. The emergency plan specifies the necessary plan. The plan will should identify the person responsible for documentation. 7. The emergency plan should be reviewed and rehearsal may be necessary. 8. The emergency plan should be reviewed by the administration and legal counsel of the sponsoring organization or institution.
