Combustion reactions
Oxidation
A chemical reaction in which the atoms of an element combine with oxygen. They are exothermic because they involve the release of energy
Fuel
A substance that will undergo a chemical reaction in which a large amount of useful energy is produced at a fast, but controlled rate.
corrosion reactions
Are combustion reaction that occur relatively slowly with no flame or sounds being produced.
Oxidation reactions
Are combustion reactions that occur very quickly and involve the release of large amounts of energy in the form of sound as well as heat and light
Advantages of using alcohol in petrol
Both Methanol and ethanol produce less pollutants then petrol. Methanol also improves engine performance.
Non-metals
Do not react with oxygen
Metal oxide
Is formed through the reactions between metals and oxygen and results in the formation of an ionic compound. If reaction occurs quickly, we see a flame but if it happens slowly we see nothing.
