What is a a narrative? Explain the difference between the objective and subjective.

A narrative is a spoken or written account of connected events; a story. It comes down to the difference between fact (objective) and opinion (subjective). Objective information has the ability to be counted or described. Subjective information on the other hand can consist of statements of judgment, assumption, belief, suspicion, or rumor.

Ralph Waldo Emerson states in Self-Reliance that "No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature." Using this aphorism, explain how Frederick Douglass would relate it to his determination to be free.

Douglass can relate to this because although the law enforcers slavery among African Americans he does not believe in it. Therefore, douglass stood up for himself and his beliefs that all humans should be equal.

Frederick Douglass says "the work was simple, requiring strength rather than intellect; yet, to one entirely unused to such work, it came very hard." Explain how this quote is an example of the use of the objective and subjective in a narrative.

Douglass is presenting an example of an objective narrative because he states that the work was simple requiring strength rather than intellect, which can be proven fact. But he shows subjectiveness when he says that the work was hard. It's his opinion.

How did Frederick Douglass stop covey from beating him again? Why do you think douglass was willing to try methods that he did not believe would work?

He fought back when Mr. Covey started to beat him after returning from his absence. Douglass was willing to try methods that he didn't believe would work because he doesn't have any better ideas and he rather die than be a slave.

What is frederick douglass's purpose for writing his narrative? Is it similar or different than olaudah equiano's purpose for writing his narrative?

His motivation to write about his life as a slave was to both inform the American public about the debased nature of slavery and to humanize the slaves negatively affected by the Southern institution. His purpose was similar to equiano's which was to tell the truth of conditions of life for slaves.

Why won't Frederick Douglass's owner, master Thomas, help him when he arrives at his house badly beaten by mr.covey? Why did that leave Douglass feeling not only broke in body but also "broken in spirit?"

His old master sides with Covey. He tells Douglass that he deserved to be beaten and praises Covey for being a good manager of slaves. He feels broken in spirit because no one is on his side and he is help

Who is mr. covey? Why is he hired by Master Thomas?

Mr. Covey is a famous "slave breaker". He is hired by Master Thomas to "break" Frederick Douglass, since he is too spoiled for a slave.

What are sensory details? Explain how Olaudah Equiano uses sensory details to explain the brutality the captive Africans endured during the middle passage.

Sensory details are details described using senses and personal feelings. Equiano used sensory details in his passage by explaining how he felt during the middle passage and the pain he endured.
