List the five primary air pollutants commonly released into the atmosphere and their sources.

Nitrogen Oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) - emissions from motor vehicles, energy production Ammonia - emissions from livestock, fertilizers, oceans, vegetation Carbon Monoxide - emissions from motor vehicles and industries Volatile Organic Compounds - emissions from solvent use, from petroleum use, production processes Ozone (O3) - emissions from various pollutants

Name two primary gases in the atmosphere.

Nitrogen and Oxygen.

Define secondary air pollutants and give an example.

caused by reactions in air already polluted by primary emissions. photochemical smog.

Describe two ways the atmosphere can get rid of pollutants.

Acid Rain and Acid Deposition.

Describe two ways the gases in the troposphere differ from those in the stratosphere.

The stratosphere-little water vapor=air is dry. Has all the same gas as troposphere, but very little water vapor and there are small amount of ozone and monoatomic oxygen troposphere-also contains 99% of the water vapor in the atmosphere.

How is each of the following involved in the production of photochemical smog: volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, thermal inversions, sunlight, automobiles, and ozone?

Volatile organic compounds- react to sunlight, creating a brown haze above cities. Nitrogen oxides- it reacts to the volatile organic compounds

List the six criteria air pollutants, their sources, and their effects.

nitrogen dioxide- sulfur dioxide- particulate matter- multiple particles mixed together, ozone-motor vehicle exhaust, gasoline vapors, and chemical solvents. lung diseases, asthma etc. lead carbon monoxide
