1: Prince Henry the navigator
1394-1460. He stared the Portuguese explorations. In 1415, he helped capture Ceuta in Morocco. He wanted to spread Christianity, he hoped to join w/Prester John to defeat Portugals Mulim enemies. He se up Sagres (south Portugal), a school for mapmakers, navigators, sailors and shipbuilders. He sponsored voyages which discovered Madeira+Azores. By the time he died, over 2400km of the African coast had been mapped.
Bartholomew Diaz
1450-1500. In 1487, he led an expedition of 3 ships down the African coast. He wanted to go around the tip of Africa and reach Asia. He got caught in a storm and lost sight of land for 13 days, when storm ended, realised that he rounded the tip of Africa. He was the first European to enter the Indian Ocean, he wanted to keep sailing to Asia but there was a shortage of food so they had to turn around. Called the tip of Africa Cape of Storms but the king John 2nd renamed it the Cape of Good Hope
Vasco Da Gama
1460-1524. In 1497, He left Lisbon w/3 ships to sail to the East. He sailed to the Atlantic but he lost sight of land for 3 months. He rounded the Cape of Good Hope, on x-mas day landed on the coast of Africa and named it Natal. May, 1498, reached Calicut, India. Major trading port, loaded ship w/spices. Return journey, 3 months, many of crew died of scurvy. Returned 1499

Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to the east. In 1500, Pedro Cabral se sail for India w/13 ships. Blown off course, discovered Brazil. When Cabral reached Calicut, established trade links. Later, Portuguese expeditions fought Muslim rulers and captured Goa, India and the main port of the Spice Islands
