Cash flows determine the value of the firm. A share of stock is only worth money because it is a claim to future cash flows, which can be consumed. Market values are forward-looking and estimate the value today of an asset based on its ability to generate cash flows now and into the future. Earnings are not cash flows—they start as cash flows and then make non-cash flow adjustments. Since they are only a poor representation of the underlying cash flows, in finance we instead focus on the cash flows themselves.
