Functions of the parts of an egg
Shell membranes (inner and outer)
acts as filters to keep the egg in good condition
Yolk
carries most nutrients and all vitamins
Shell
prevents damage to egg and shields it against bacteria
vitelline membrane
surrounds the yolk and holds it together
Germinal Disc
Becomes a chick if the egg is fertilized
White or Albumen
Make up 60% of the egg. There are two types of white, the thick white stands up and the thin white runs towards the edge.
Chalazae
Membranes that hold an egg yolk in place
Air Cell
Pocket of air formed at large end of egg, as the egg ages, it loses water and air is drawn in to replace it so the air pocket gets larger
