Cylindrical Grip

Type of Power Grip: all fingers flexed around an object that usually lies at a right angle to the forearm. Opposite thumb is wrapped and often overlapping fingers. A CYLINDRICAL GRIP VARIATION has fingers flexed around a handle in a graded fashion, holding a golf club or screw driver.

Spherical Grip

Type of Power Grip: all fingers spread apart and abducted, picking up a glass jar by the lid.

Hook Grip

Type of Power Grip: second through fifth fingers flexed around an object in a hook like manner. This is the only power grip possible if someone has a median nerve injury and cannot oppose the thumb. Holding handles on bucket or suitcase.

Pad-to-side/Lateral Prehesion

Type of Precision Grip: extended thumb is pressing an object against the radial side of the index finger. Allows less fine movements.

Pinch Grip/Pad-to-pad Grip

Type of Precision Grip: pinch grip is index finger to thumb pad grip. Pad to pad is other fingers to thumb.

Side-to-side Grip

Type of Precision Grip: similar to pad to side grip. Weak. Does not permit much precision. Holding a cigarette.

Lumbrical Grip/Plate Grip

Type of Precision Grip: the thumb opposes the fingers holding the object horizontal.

Pincer/Tip-to-tip Grip

Type of Precision Grip: tip of the thumb to tip of another digit. Used to pick up small objects like a coin or pin.

Three-jaw Chuck Grip

Type of Precision Grip: two fingers and a thumb. Holding a pencil or pen, very common grip.

Precision Grip

Used when an object must be manipulated in a finer type movement. Holding a pen or threading a needle.

Power Grip

Involves a significant amount of force, isometric contraction. Holding a hammer or doorknob.
