Legalization of Unions 1871

Allowed workers to peacefully protest.

Repeal of the Corn Laws

Got rid of the tariff on things coming into England. The tariff prohibited outside products to be shipped into Britain to sell. Business owners of Britain were afraid of competition. Getting rid of the tariff brought prices down, more variety of foods and products available, and more trade.

Reform Act of 1832

Passed by the king because he felt threatened from the Urban Workers. It shifted the House of Commons from rural, unpopulated areas to new industrial towns. Extended voting rights to all urban middle class males.

Combinations Act

People were no longer allowed to go on strike.

1st of Factory Acts

Boys and girls 9-13 can only work 8 hours a day and boys 14-18 can work 12 hours a day.

Reform Act of 1867

Gave voting rights to all urban workers.

Right to Strike 1875

Gave workers the right to strike. Parliament was therefore able to meet the demands of workers which created a better situation for everyone.

Chartist Movement

Movement from the people in that they promoted universal male suffrage. (voting rights for all men).

10 Hours Act

The 10 hours Act limited all workers to only 10 hours a day.

1st Mines Act 1842

The 1st Mines Act banned all women from working in mines, and boys had to be 13 years or older to be able to work in the mines.

1st Public Health Act

The 1st Public Health Act forced city officials to clean and pave the roads. 1st medical health officer, surveyor and sanitary inspector. These people go out and clean the streets, and make sure you have a healthy living situation. This turned into sewers and a clean water supply. People more willing to pay taxes.

1st Metropolitan Police Force 1889

The Metropolitan police force made slums safer, and therefore less crime occurred.
