Innervation

Dorsal scapular nerve (C5), ventral rami C3-C4

Where is it found?

Located at back and side of neck, deep and inferior to the trapezius muscle and deep and superior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

Insertion

Medial border of the scapula superior to the scapular spine

Origin

Posterior tubercles TP C1-C4

Action

Scapula: elevation and downward rotation Closed chain: ipsilateral lateral flexion of the neck

Interesting to note

The spinal accessory nerve (CN XI) crosses the levator scapulae laterally in the middle part of the muscle. Is one of the muscles within the floor of the posterior triangle of the neck. Dorsal scapular nerve may lie deep or pass through the levator scapulae muscle.
