Lewin's force field analysis
Benefits of a Force Field Analysis
- Allows a business to strengthen the driving forces supporting the change and to take action to reduce the restraining forces - Businesses are able to weigh up the 'for's and against' and whether the change is worth undertaking - Visual aid which that can support communication and reduce communication barriers
Weaknesses of Force Field Analysis
- Process is subjective and requires collaborative thinking and agreement - All aspects of the problem may not be identified
Analysis of force field analysis
By identifying the driving and restraining forces, Lewin argued that business mangers can assess the situation and then develop an action plan on the forces which can be changed to allow the change to occur.
Driving forces
Driving forces are forces that initiate, encourage and support change and work to assist the business in achieving its goals.
Lewin's Force Field Analysis
Lewin's force field analysis, developed in 1969 by Kurt Lewin, is a concept of identifying and analysing the driving forces (which push and encourage the change to occur) as well as the restraining forces (which hinder the change from occurring)
Restraining forces
Restraining forces are those forces that work against the change, creating resistance which stops that change and preventing the business from achieving their objectives.
