Define a mixture and a compound. Give examples of each.

A mixture is when two or more chemicals come together but keep their individual properties.EX:sand and water paint and water. A compound is when two or more chemicals bond and form a new substance. H2O water and and hydrogen make water.

What is an atom?Name the sub-atomic parts and describe where they are.

Atoms make up matter. The smalest part of an element.Protons (positive charge), and a neutrons (no charge) are in the center of an atom the nueclus. Then there is electrons (negitive charge) are are in rings that move around the atom.

How do chemical bonds affect the atoms of a molecule.

Chemical bonds hold the atoms of the molecule together.

In an atom the number of protons are equal to the number of what two things?

It is equal to the atomic number and the number of electrons.

Define mass and volume.

Mass is the amount of matter in an object.Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.Mass=grams volume= liters

Define matter and list the states of matter.give an examlpe of each

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. There are three types of matter, solid, liquid, and gas.A baseball is a solid , water is a liquid, oxygen and helium are gasses.

What is a phisycal change. Give three examples.

Matter that can be observed without ghanging the compound of the substance.Tearing, folding, and cutting are all phisycal changes.

What is a chemical change? Give three examples.

Matter that is changed chemicaly and changes the make up of the substance like rusting, burning, and oxidizing

Describe freezing point and boiling point.Melting point.

Melting point is the temperature at which a solid turns to a liquid. Freezing point is the temperature that a liquid turns into a solid.Boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas.

If the mass of the substance changes does this affect points of states change?

No because even if it loses mass it is still the same thing.

Describe the difference between the particles in a solid, liquid, and gas?

The particles in a solid are in a fixed position and are very tight together. They barely move.It has a definite shape and volume. In a liquid the particles move around. They have a definite volume and no definite shape. But, the particles in a gas are free to move around and take up any available space. It has no definite shape or volume.

Explain solubility. Give two examples of things that are and things that aren't

The property of a substance to dissolve. Salt and water and sugar and tea are all soluble.Sand and water and oil and water aren't.

What is vaporization and condensation?

Vaporization is a physical change that is when a liquid turns to a gas.Condensation is a physical change in which a gas turns into a liquid.

The mass of an element can be found by adding what two things?

You can add the number of protons and neutrons.

The atomic number of an element can be found by looking at the number of ____ and ______.

You need to look at the number of protons and electrons.

How do you find the number of neutrons the nucleus.

You subtract the atomic mass by the atomic number.(The protons are also equal to the atomic number)

What is an elemenT?

a pure, simple substance that cant be broken down into anyother substance.
