Domesticity
Women as keepers of the home Providing a moral centerpiece Elevated position- a special role Fundamental piece of their social identity Children and husband Honors women, but can be sifilling No options- all women are told to do this one type of life.
Flapper
young women who came of age were out for personal rebellion Challenged older standards Short dresses- legs and arms out Move around more freely (showed when they danced) VA= long hair, flappers= short hair (freeing) Makeup, smoked, jazz clubs, drove cars, and drank Dance close to men who they weren't their husbands Threatening to peoples values- states charged women fines for short dresses, accused for acting like men, just liked to have fun Catt- independent minded was not the same as a flapper
Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
Alice Paul said this wasn't the end of the road Wanted to be even more equality- employment and education and such "Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the US and every place subject to its jurisdiction" Everyone disapproved of this. WHY? It would take away the womens law already in place. The ones that gave women the benefits such as shorter hours, no night shifts, no heavy lifting Progressives stated this was classist- saying this was not helping the working woman but only the rich women NEVER recieved enough votes to ratify
National Woman's Party (NWP)
Alice Paul's new party Different: 1: more radial and confrontational More in your face and not ladylike 2: constitutional amendment Not state by state like NAWSA Women would never get the vote if it went by state by state so they needed national action These women during the election of the 1916 picketed the white house and held signs to protest Women were arrested and released for bad forces while in jail (wilson releases them because of the media backlash) Wilson was always worried about bad press and thought the womens movement would help with good press and his daughter helped Finally came out as a supporter of the women's suffrage movement His support helped make the movement for the new amendment By this time, 17 states already had women voting.

Comes from the reign of queen Victoria In power until 1901 During the VA- women and mens roles were clearly defined

Hunger strike?? Thought they were very effective Joins NAWSA Restless- wants to do something big to get everyones attention Plans the march on Washington Scheduled the day before Woodrow Wilsons Anug. Lots of women and men march (still had VA views) Had to be protected by the national guard Gets lots of attention- but where that is, there is controversy Black women want to march to- puts them at the back to march together Start to create a tension between Alice Paul and NAWSA Opposed Wilson in the election of 1916 "Wilson kept us out of suffrage"

Separate Spheres
Like domesticity- one sphere= the home (domestic sphere for women) second sphere= the public sphere (worker, money and finance, politics, law and order for men) Hard for women to live up to this sphere ideas. Middle class and high class only Immigrant women and poor women had to work outside the home. 1/4 of only for work for these women compared to men Terrible to work as a woman (gives brith on the floor of favorites)

Main helper of the women's suffrage movement Goes from the old generation to the new generation Susan B. Anthony- she stepped down as president and gave it to Carrie Catt

wanted to help women who were born and were dying because of home done abortions Women rebel- what every girl should know with basic sex tips To avoid arrest- goes to England where she learns more about brith control Opens the first birth control clinic- 400 women come to get information in the 9 days it was open Working class women, immigrants, poor women wanted to IS essentially the founder of planned parenthood Critics- 1: promoted abortion (not true as much) Thought it was okay in some cases, but she didn't support it. She mostly want to help women who didn't want to have more children and hoped birth control would stop abortions. 2: Eugenics- preventing the procreation of the unfit. She built clinics in poor areas
