MacWrite

Sholes Typewriter

In 1867, Christopher Latham Sholes, with the assistance of two colleagues, invented the first successful manual typewriter.

Commercial Typewriter

In 1874, the typewriter began to be marketed commercially, by a gun manufacturing company, E. Remington and Sons. The main drawback of this model was that it printed on the underside of the roller, so that the typist could not view his work until he had finished

Selectric Typewriter

In 1961, IBM replaced the standard movable carriage and individual typestrikers with a revolving typeball. This could print faster than the traditional typewriter. With the same year, it also introduced word processing as a definite idea and concept. The term was first used in IBM's marketing of the MT/ST as a word processing machine.

AES Word Processor

In 1972, Stephen Bernard Dorsey, Founder and President of Canadian company Automatic Electronic Systems (AES), introduced the world's first programmable word processor with a video screen. This machine stored the operator's texts on magnetic disks. Texts could be retrieved from the disks simply by entering their names at the keyboard. Also, a text could be edited and changes can be recorded back to the disk.

Electric Pencil

In 1976, it is released as the first word processor software for microcomputers. Software-based word processors running on general-purpose personal computers gradually displaced dedicated word processors, and the term came to refer to software rather than hardware.
