Election of 1824
Nationalism: Adams (nationalist) won the election Sectionalism: The west was mad because Jackson won the most votes but not the majority. Federal government won over the state vote.
Tariff of 1828
Nationalism: Helped the northern merchants Sectionalism: Farmers had to buy goods so everything was more expensive for them: south strongly opposed.
Cotton Gin
Nationalism: Indifferent because it helped the South but didn't affect North Sectionalism: helped the South's economy and also established slavery.
National Road
Nationalism: a road from Maryland to Ohio that connected the Northeast and West Sectionalism: South against it because didn't benefit them.
American System
Nationalism: meant to unite the country and build a national economy. Sectionalism: Focused on economies of the North and West not South.
Bank War
Nationalism: regulated money and supplies; gave money to all states. Sectionalism: North favored it, but South didn't because it made it harder for them to pay off loans.
South Carolina Nullification Crisis
South Carolina refused to pay the taxes and Jackson sent in troops.
Missouri Compromise
nationalism: the compromise kept the country together sectionalism: for three reasons; 1) Missouri slave state 2) Maine free state 3) 36 30 line, everything above line would be free
