PLTW Brainstorming and Design Process
Design process in IED
1. Define the Problem 2. Generate Concepts 3. Develop a Solution 4. Construct and Test a Prototype 5. Evaluate the Solution 6. Present the Solution
Brainstorming
A group technique for solving problems, generating ideas, and stimulating creative thinking.
Iterative
A process that repeats a series of steps over and over until the desired outcome is obtained

Define brainstorming documentation.
All ideas should be captured: have a note taker, take photographs, compile ideas after the session
What to remember about welcoming piling-on?
All ideas should be recorded.
What to remember about no criticism allowed?
Allow all members to contribute
Generic Term for Design
Anything made by conscious human effort
If you get stuck...
Combine partial solutions Try a different brainstorming technique Try both individual and group brainstorming Do some more research
Forced Association
Ideas created by mentally forcing the association of two seemingly unrelated items.
Mind mapping consist of?
Main and major ideas
Rules for Brainstorming
No criticism allowed, work for quantity, welcome piling-on, allow free-for-all
What to remember about high quantity brainstorming?
People must experience "brain-drain" before innovative, creative ideas can surface.
What is free form brainstorming?

Substitute something, combine it with something else, adapt something to it, magnify or add to it, modify it, put it to some other use, eliminate something, rearrange it, reverse it.
Where might lie the solution to the problem?
The most off-the-wall idea
The design process in IED is just one design process but...
There are many more processes that exist and are effective
What should I do with Outrageous, humorous, and seemingly unimportant ideas?
They should be recorded.
List the Concept Generation Dysfunctions.
Utilizing poor design brief Assuming there is only one right answer Getting hooked on the first solution Considering ideas from only one or two team members Feeling too anxious to finish Becoming frustrated by the lack of success Getting hooked on a solution that almost works
