Use Statistics: -women only earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men -simply put, what it conveys is the fact that, if you average out what all women, working full time, year round, earn and compare that number to what all men working full time, year round, earn, you find that women take home 77 percent of what men do - how is wage gap determined? 77 cents on the dollar does not compare men and women doing identical work.

-In reality, 77 cent figure does capture some discrimination but also reflects gender differences in jobs, hours worked, years of experience, educational attainment, or personal choices that people make about their career. -different degrees + lower pay = men and women often dont hold the same jobs, on average have the same years of experience, work the same hours, or equally share the responsibility of childbirth and child care

Statistics for women -Just graduated high school? You'll earn $700k less than young men who you graduated with during your working life -Just graduated college - you will lose $1.2 million compared to the man who graduated with you -Graduated from law school, med school or got an MBA last summer? You'll lose $2 million throughout your life time -2012 - 75% of healthcare practitioners and technical occupations and 74% of education, training and library occupations were held by women

-Wage gap still exists in America, 2012 women working full-time year-round jobs earned only 77% of what men earned -Center for American progress (CAP) found that the average female worker loses approximately $434,000 in wages over a 40 year period as a direct result of pay inequalities -Over a 40 year period women with a high school degree will earn on average $392,000 less than their male counterparts while women with bachelors or higher will earn $713,000 less than their male counterparts -Yale - "pervasive" discrimination towards female undergrads in the science fields

How can we change it, and/or what can you do to change this?: -Closing the gap - legal routes *If you believe your male counterpart at your job is making more than you, start off by going to human resources -you should have a legitimate reason for believing you are being underpaid. The company rumor mill is not a reliable source

Introduction: Explain what the wage gap is Wage gap = earning of all women compared to earning of all men (full time) Part-time: not included in wage gap calculations. This eliminates the assumption that working women earn less because they are missing from the work force.

...

-Ratio of women's to men's weekly earnings is 76.4% for those with no children under the age of 18, only 73.6% for those without children -Women in every state experienced the pay gap, but some states are worse than others. -Pay gap is worse for women of color -women face a pay gap in nearly every occupation -pay gap grows with age -while more education is effective tool for increasing earnings, it is not an effective tool against the gender pay gap -pay gap also exists among women without children

Explain how it has always been an issue (Wal-Mart Story from early 2000s): -Equal Pay Act of 1963 - requires men and women to be paid the same for equal work -Gender discrimination - June 2001, case was filed against Wal-Mart alleging unfair pay and promotions for female employees -Only 33% of women are in management positions and less than 15% of store managers are women

-More than 12 million families with children rely primarily on women's earnings -Over 1/3 of mothers in working families in every state except Wyoming and Utah are family's bread winners, either as single working mothers or by providing half of family's earnings -2011 - black single mothers - approximately 38.4% were below the poverty line compared to 27% of white single mothers Controversy: (play video)

What factors contribute to this?: -When we're growing up, men are raised to speak their minds and get what they want, while women are raised to be cooperative and do as they're told -Hilary M. Lips - study found that the gap actually increases in conjunction with education level -Very highest levels of education have the largest gap -Statistics do not account for part-time or unemployed mothers, family factor still exists -Child-negative effects on wages, even when labor market experience is taken into account
