What is a mental status examination? When would you administer it? Give examples of at least 5 domains that are commonly assessed.

According to Watson and Flamez (p. 400, 2015), "a mental status examination (MSE) is a structured interview designed to objectively assess the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning or mental state of a client at the time of the interview. The MSE would be administered at various times throughout the counseling process." There are various domains the counselor will look at here I will present five of the domains with examples of each. Domain 1 - Appearance: counselor assesses the client based on their walk, posture, if they look clean or unkempt and overall how the client presents themselves Domain 2 - Mood: counselor is assessing how the client is feeling by asking questions like, how are you feeling today? What has your mood been like recently? Domain 3 - Speech and Language: counselor is listening to the clients' rate of speech, volume, their word choices, their articulation of words and such Domain 4 - Attitude: counselor takes into consideration and assesses if the client is cooperative, hostile, open, anxious, agitated, distracted, focused, indifferent, or other types of attitude. Domain 5 - Memory: counselor assesses if the client's memory, immediate, recent, and long-term. This can be done by asking simple words (immediate), asking questions about the client/appointment (recent), asking client to recall specific details of a significant event (long-term) Citation Watson, J.
