False Ribs (8-12)
Inferior 5 pairs, they attach to the sternum either indirectly or not at all.
Neck
Just lateral to the head
Tubercle
Knoblike, articulates with the transverse process of the thoracic vertebra of the same number
True ribs (1-7)
Superior 7 pairs, attached directly to the sternum by the costal cartilages
Shaft
The bulk of the rib, superior border is smooth and its inferior border is sharp and thin with costal groove on its inner face
Angle
The shaft curve sharply anteriorly (closer to the spine) and extends to the costal cartilage anteriorly
Floating Ribs (11-12)
They have no anterior attachments
Facet of the tubercle
an oval facet on the inferomedial part of the tubercle of a rib for articulation with a facet on the transverse process of a vertebra
Costal cartilage
the bars of hyaline cartilage that serve to prolong the ribs forward. only found at the anterior ends of the ribs
